Guys,
I was looking a John Deere book on the JD 4000 series tractors and implements, and I was looking at the 350 sickle bar mower,it leasts it as only being used on the JD 4500/4600/4700 series. Is there any reason it would not work on my JD 4400,also what is the going price on these?

Hillbilly:

You might want look at the ones sold by First Choice. I think they have two nodels designed for compact utility tractors, in 5 and 7 ft. Most of their products are considerably cheaper in cost, without any loss in quality.BesidesI beleve you can get them in JD green as well.

The problem with the JD 350 on a small tractor is the weight of the unit and cutter bar. I tried one on my JD790 with loaded tires and couldn't keep the the left side on the ground when lifting the cutter bar. I have seen several smaller units advertized but don't recall where. You might try one of the older trailer (horse drawn) type, they work good as long as you don't have to backup.

Hillbilly,

I was pricing out the 350 sickle bar mower for my 4710. Learned JD discontinued production of these units, maybe for the reason cited by HalseyGreen. He raises good points and I'll have to do more research on this. The 4710 though is a fairly big compact and I can't fathom why a sickle bar mower wouldn't work on it.

Hi Rich....

I was searching for my scribble sheets I had from the dealers....can't seem to find the one on the JD350 sickle bar. But, if I recall right two years ago I was quoted either $3,300 or $3,700 for the 350 with 7' bar by Gillis over at Allen Farm Equipment. When I again tried to price these out this past Spring, I found out they were being discontinued and I couldn't get a price for a new unit.

Either case, I felt this was a bit too much. I may get a JD350 used if only in excellent condition when I can save up enough to make this purchase. I've also done some preliminary research and looking at the Eno Rossi and NH lines. These are a bit less expensive than the JD 350 was, I believe by about $1-1.5K or more.

Hope this helps. BTW, how's haying coming along? This rain last night sure doesn't help things much toward this end.

Catch you later....
Bob
