I'm in the process of rebuilding my grandfathers old Rotary Cutter. When I picked it up, there was no provision for protecting the tractor. You guys educated me to the need of either shear pins or a Slip Clutch. I picked up a clutch at Tractor Supply. There was no information with it. I called TSC, got the Mfg. name, number, and called Customer Service. I was told that she "didn't think any adjustment was needed". I've read you guys talking about clutches needing adjustment after a period of time, but do they need any adjustment when new?

A slip clutch will need to be adjusted prior to use. I can't remember the specific details, but I am pretty sure you could go the John Deere website and pull up the manual for the MX6 rotary cutter. I have an MX6 and did not get the manual with it when I bought it. I downloaded and printed a copy to keep on hand and I believe it gave step by step instruction on how to slip the clutch plates annually and set them up.

Sockwell, Adjustment is real easy. Loosen bolts until it slips. Then tighten equally in increments. Check when mowing, if it is hot it's slipping. Tighten until it does not slip in normal use. Should be loosened & readjusted at the beginning of the season or after periods of disuse to make sure plates are not stuck/rusted.
It's reasonable to think a new clutch has been sitting for a while although in favorable conditions & adjusting can't hurt. MikeD74T

Thanks for the help. Saw the section on adjusting the clutch. Also learned that I've been cutting with the uncut grass on the opposite side of what is recommended. Almost always cut with uncut grass on the left. They say, based on direction of blade rotation, the uncut grass should be on your left. Thanks again.
