Old offset disc

This one I'm posting as nostalgia. My Dad found it on his neighbour's yard - made the exchange agreement for some yard work, did some figuring and rebuilt the unit. There was no color left on it to speak of, but we think we can see Massey Harris on the control arm. We found this unit for sale as an item in a 1948 Sears catalogue to boot, which was pretty cool to see. Amazing, really what used to be sold through Sears back in the day.

You can see the sector is not original an we couldn't locate it, even with a metal detector. The disc set itself was in about 8 inches of soil as it had been left for so long. The reach has been rebuilt out of Black Ash. The seat and seat "arm" are missing also, but would go into the bracket above the discs, making the user into the weight to press the discs down.

Pretty nice find. Funny how many old implements also required an operator to ride on a seat and operate the implement. A hydraulic cylinder has replaced that guy......and a few concrete blocks even replaces his ballast.
I bet most four wheelers would pull that disc around....if you dont set it too agressively.

I have a few of the old cast iron operators seats that I put on some short pieces of logs set on end. Makes a good conversation piece....and a fair place to sit.

most if not all horse drawn implements are designed that way.

I'm amazed how much of this stuff can simply get left to "rot", the bush grows up around it and it slowly sinks into the mud. We also found some old metal rings which were just in perfect alignment from where the wooden wagon wheel was left over 50 years ago - the wood rotted and the rings are the only evidence, the wheel surface and 2 or 3 hub rings...

A good 4 wheeler would pull the disc as you mentioned, but my Massey will do it with style. It'll be nice to have and use, since all I have to this point to use after plowing is a harrow with metal pins on the bottom.

Amazing, really what used to be sold through Sears back in the day.

My sister-in-law lived a good many years in a house made by Sears. They were kits. You bought them out of the catalog. And this was not a small house. And by today's standards it was extremely well built. It is Victorian in style and has extremely nice features throughout. Amazing woodwork and molding.
