There's a local auction service that is handling a number of mowers the state is disposing of. Several are batwings that have just one wing making them 10' mowers. Is that a normal setup, i.e., just one wing instead of two? Would there be any problem running with one wing? Thanks.

In your prior posting on the subject of mowers, I commented on my having a Bush Hog 10' single wing batwing. (BH3710) They're quite common in the highway right-of-way mowing industry. In fact, they're IDEAL for that task. Bush Hog and Rhino sell quite a few of that style mower, as does several other players in the industry. I plan on adding AT LEAST one more simular mower next season if all my existing contracts fall in line for the upcoming season.

When looking at a used batwing, check the obvious, like PTO shaft condition, gearbox condition, bearings (for play) seals, ect. Also, check the deck hinge. You'd be amazed at how much abuse that part takes. If the mower LOOKS battered, it probably was. Buying from a municipality/highway dept, those mowers most likely saw extensive use. In MOST cases, they also receive excellent maintenance, so they may be in great shape.....or not.

Thanks Farmwith, I guess I didn't read your post well before. This is good news as there are several to choose from. I appears the single wings are going to go for much less than the dual wings. As you said before, 10' should be what I need to look at. Thanks for the advice on what to inspect.

DO heed FWJ's warning and pay attention to the wing hinge.

I bought a used bawing from a horsefarm for cheap money knowing it needed work. I had to reweld the wing hinge, but was prepaired for that. Not a hard task.. just something to be mindfull of.

Other than roadside mowing, is there any other good reason to get a single wing mower? Does a single wing even cover the tire tracks?

It'll work well in ANY situation where a 10' (or whatever width) mower is desired.

Absolutely! You'll have 10' of mower, one side relatively close to being in line with outside of one wheel track and the opposite side overhanging a fair bit.

I think mowing a fenceline or other similar barrier would be easy, especially for a beginner, on that sort of mower.. as you can hug the line on one side.

plus.. if you have mild slop ditch banks to mow.. or mower near traffic it will be good.
