Collar on my PTO coupling has to be twisted (not pushed) to get on and off.
I've tried that too. I assume it's the PTO that came with the Bush Hog. Something's not right though because I got it on once a couple of days ago; wish I hadn't taken it off ;-)

I think I would try cleaning the spring-loaded pin and ball bearing area with some solvent or carburator cleaner and get it free and working smoothly. Then I would go back and spray it with WD-40 or some lubricant. Greasing the shaft is as impprtant though. I'd start with the shaft and get it moving smoothly as others have mentioned and work towards the tractor. Sometimes they take a pretty good amount of wiggle to get them off of the PTO shaft if all isn't lubed or mating properly. Also, you might try pulling the shaft apart and just use the one end to figure out if it's at the tractor PTO or the shaft itself. Good luck.

Just as an FYI, on my BushHog SQ720 mower, you have to pull backwards on the retaining ring that's at the very front end of the PTO coupler to attach or detach the PTO shaft. It's a major pain cause you have to pull backward on the retaining ring with pushing forward on the shaft to attach the thing.

I'd like to point out that wd40 ain't a good penetrant or lubricant.. it's darn good at removing water though!

soak the end of that shaft in a bucket of diesle for a day or two.. then tap on it all over with a hammer. then soak some more.. then see what ya got.

Ha!! You win the prize, eTEXMan! I wasn't able to think about this all week because of work but then yesterday I went out and tried your advice and it works! Amazing. The simplest things!

Thanks much,
JR
