Just to let y'all know.....I know nothing about round bailers. There are a gazillion brands/models/sizes. Help me narrow the field....

I am tired of watching my 21 ac go from seed to weed waiting for the guy to come cut and bail it(he has cut it once this year so far). I made him a really good deal, cut and bail it 3 times a year and it's yours for free. I have bottom land pasture, it's a little bumpy, but turns out between 50 and 80 4x5 rolls each cut even during drought years.
I have decided that this winter I am buying hay bailing equipment. So, the biggest questions I have are:

Haybine or cutter?

What 4x4-5' brand & model round bailer would YOU recommend for a 40 horse tractor?

I cannot afford new, so what do I look at/for when looking at a used bailer? This keeps me from looking like an idiot while I make a somewhat informed decsion....:D

Yes, I will sell most of it, but will be building a hay barn to store 250-300 rolls(banking on another dry season). My fields are a fescue/johnson grass mix. I will be weeding and fertilizing this spring.

I have access to a bigger tractor, but hate "borrowing".

Not real sure, but don't think you have enough tractor to run a round bailer.....even a 4x4.

Just got back from my dealer. He recommends the Heston 530, 730 & 5530, the New Idea 483 & 4643.
TY, these are called 4x4 but the rolls are actually smaller. How's things in Tyler? I worked for the city for 7 years back in the 80's.

Things here are a bit slow like elsewhere, I guess. The company I work for has been laying off since December. Around here, the commerical guys use Deere bailers mostly, and smaller operations use alot of Vermeer. How do you like Tenn.? Good luck on your purchase.

For a 4x4 baler with a low power requirement how about a Krone KR125, it is a very simple machine manufacturers stated power requirement is 35 hp but50 hp would work it much better. M&W build a baler very similar to the Krone too.

TY,
Retired almst 3 years now in TN....LOVE it!

I will be going to a few auctions after reseaching these balers. It looks like I should let my neighbor do the baleing since he has a 60horse. It looks like I should do the cutting and tedding.....

We were in the same boat as you with our neighbor destroying our hayfield by leaving the hay down too long. We also decided to buy our own hay equipment. I bought a Gehl 1870 tdc baler (which is bigger than you were talking about) for $2500 and it is great shape. I could not touch a John Deere or a Hesston that was a 1994 model for twice the price. It does a great job of baling and all of the parts are still available. It would require more horsepower than the 40 that you have but it might be something to look at.
