PTO Shaft Safety Shield.....

On my 5' KK Rotary Kutter's PTO shaft......the roll pin, which connects the shaft with the u-joint, worked its way out of place (about 1/2 way out) and severed the PTO plastic safety shield. I had been nursing the other end of the safety "tube and bell joint" together as well....so it looks like I need to replace the entire unit (the plastic "weld" didn't hold up here). I understand from reading previous posts that there are about three brands for these shields. The brand I have is La Magdelena.

Is there a "standard" for these shields in order that they will interchange with one another?....or do I have to purchase the same brand to fit the iron I have? If they do interchange......is one brand better or worse than the others? I assume (errrr....hope) that TSC will have the replacement safety shields when I get there tomorrow.

I removed the old roll pin and installed a new one and then "staked" the casting with a center punch to hopefully prevent the pin from working loose again. Any advice here? (If that roll pin had come all the way out.....I can see where it could cause allot of damage).

Also of concern is that the bolts that hold the gear box to the cutter are all loose too. The safety shield drew my attention to the loose gear box after a pretty good workout in the brush. It appears that in order to tighten the bolts I will need to remove the stump jumper.....and I just read a post here on how to do that. I cant understand that KK didn't use lock washers on the gear box....they do on other joints.

One thing I would suggest is to use Loc Tite 242 removeable threadlocker (the blue stuff) on those bolts. Personally I trust that much more than most mechanical locking devices.

I just wanted to know if the various PTO brands have a universal size / means to install a replacement sheild?.....or are they brand specific?

I searched the archives for information...but alas. I would think the safety police on TBN would be all over this topic. Instead I get locktite information....lol.

If I learn something in this area today I will try to post the information.

OK....what I learnt:

1. No standards for safety shields. Each brand has its own size bushings to fit onto the metal parts and fitting the plastic shields are unique to those bushings.

2. My local TSC does not support parts for any of the PTO brands sold by King Kutter (duh) rather they will sell you an expensive aftermarket replacement.

3. Calling KK directly resulted in a FREE replacement sheild.

OK kids (TSC).......This is no way to run a rail road. IMO, if your gonna sell stuff.....then, you gotta support it with the correct replacement parts. Unfortunately....they (TSC) don't even know what I am talking about.

I did get the stump jumper removed to access the bolts holding the gear box.....added some lock washers......and tightened 'em down. Limped along with the old shield...until the new one arrived just yesterday. All is good to go now.

This is disappointing to learn. Seems like they would try and standardize these a bit more.

Golf clap for KK!!!! Glad you got your PTO shield fixed up. I "learnt" a little bit from your research so a golf clap for you to foggy!
