I am looking at purchasing an auger and 9" bit from Tractor Supply and possibly a 6 ft rear discharge finish mower also to go behind my JD 5103 50hp tractor. Has anyone bought implements from here and are they recommended? I noticed they are a good bit cheaper than the Frontier line of implements JD carries. Any input is appreciated.

You have alot of tractor for cheap implements like those. I would look at something built a little heavier.

My brother had those and used it on a 40 hp tractor. His area is extremely rocky (mountain area) and he said that the frame for the auger was built well, but the auger itself wouldn't take the abuse he was giving it (several miles of fence going up) in the rocks. He eventually destroyed it and bought a new, heavy duty auger and used it in the same frame. I believe he even used it on a 75 hp tractor a few times.

For land that is sandy or light, I would think it would work fine if you took care not to overpower it. If you're going to do a LOT of holes, then in any sort of soil I'd go up a step in the "beefier" department just to save on normal wear later on causing issues.

My neighbor has one and loves it. He drove 100 pier holes for a sea wall for his HOA downstate He has also uses it on his farm, situated right behind me. I borrow some of his implements, as he has THEM ALL it seems. :D

If you are like my neighbor John, you have a need or desire for lots of implements. Almost all of his are from TSC or reasonable fac simili.

No issues, really. They are what they are. As you said yourself, they are priced well below dealership equipment. Sure, they are a cut below, but solid stuff for the price. Depends on whether you are going to use it all day, everyday or are just collecting occasionally used implements.

I do not plan to use it often, just something I would like to have, especially when the ground ( sandy clay mix) on my property gets hard when there is no rain. I have had manual post hole diggers bounce of this stuff but an auger got right thru it. I have not decided on the finish mower yet. I bushhog my whole place (except around the house and barn) and quite honestly the bushhog does a nice job. My wife is afraid of snakes, which we have a lot of, and she feels a finish mower will be able to cut the grass lower, like the lawn around our house. The grass I will be cutting is bahia, which is rather tough and may be a problem for a finish mower.

I have a TSC post hole drill and auger. For my use, it has been wonderful. I built fence as a job for many years and doubt it would have held up then but for my personal (and occasional) use, it is just right. Unless I go back to fence full time, I am pretty sure it will last as long as I need it.

I also bought the PHD with 9" and 12" auger. I have very rough rocky/clay land. I built an added an extention so that I could get the 12" 5'+ down. I busted my extention twice but the PHD did perfectly fine. For the $$$ I have NO complaints, just don't abuse it.

Bahia grass is hard to mow and to make it look like a lawn. Where your tires travel it tends to lay over then stick back up when you are two swaths away. mowing early when there is moisture in the grass seems to help. Oh did I mention I HATE BAHIA GRASS.

Bahia grass is tough on old cows too.

Solved the problem...the local co op had a Howse w/ a 9" bit that looked a little heavier duty than the one at TSC. It was only about $20 different. The one at TSC came with a 6" bit anyway and was 25 miles from the house whereas the co op is 10. Actually seems like I came out ahead!
