Hi,

I have two 5 1/2' Gannon box blades. One I know is the landscaper model (the newer one with picture named "box blade2.jpg") and I think the other one is also a landscaper model.

The newer box blade is missing one its two torsion springs. So, I have 3 out of 4 torsion springs. All 3 are rusty. My post here is to find out if anyone knows where I can get the correct torsion springs. If the price was right, I'd get several new torsion springs. The torsion spring is in the picture named "springs unattached.jpg."

I'm also missing coils springs which are also in the picture names "springs unattached.jpg." However, I think these would be easy to find if I just keep looking.

To get another look at these springs, I've uploaded a picture names "springs on box blade1.jpg."

I've included a picture called "box blade1.jpg," which shows the old box blade. It will be up for sale as soon as I sort out my spring issue. If anyone is interested now, just let me know. It is in rough condition, but it works!

boxblade2 shows how the previous owner bent the lever to hold the rippers up because the springs were missing.

Here are what I think my options are (in order of preference):
1) find new springs to buy.
2) find enough people who also want springs that I get them custom made. I priced them at one place and the price was approximately $80 for the first spring and $5 for each additional spring. Sine these springs come in left and right, they said $160 for the first pair and $10 for each addiitonal pair. I'd need a few other people involved for me to want to pay the spring maker's setup cost.
3) steel a spring from the old box blade (box blade 1) and put it on the newer box blade. That could lead to having to bend the handle of box blade 1 so it also holds up the rippers. I'm not thrilled about this idea.
4) Any other ideas? My back is a bit too old to be lifting those rippers w/o the springs. I do it, but don't like it. So, I need a better idea that what I'm doing now.

FYI, my access to internet will be on and off the next 3 weeks, so fogive me if I don't reply to anything promptly.

Thanks,

Don

That's a spring for the rollover BB.

Any Woods dealer (including TBN member Messicks) has or can get springs. Torsion springs are part #H056B. The other springs are part #H056A.

Thanks for the tip John as you solved my problem for me. You were right. H056B is the spring. The mirror image spring is H056A. H013 is the coil spring which does not have a left or right hand, but there is one for each side.

Turns out that Danny at Graham Tractor in NC (a local Woods dealer) not only knew what I was looking for, but had the springs in stock. Danny worked at Woods for years. He thinks those same springs work for Woods H115 through H420 box blades (which are just different width boxes). I bought the replacement torsion springs for about $33 each. I'm thrilled. Danny said he can get more of them if someone needs them.

Take care,

Don

You're welcome Don. When setting up the torsion spring tension you'll want to find a happy medium between loose enough to move and stiff enough to keep the scarifier rack from banging around which will drive you nuts. This kit contains pins that are perfectly sized for the torsion keeper holes. 74 Piece Clevis Pin Assortment. I also use the larger pins in the kit with double clips to hold the tailgate in place when spreading topsoil and stone. Nothing worse than a tailgate flopping around when you're trying to fine grade.
