does 6\" make a diff

i am purchasing a l3010 with r4 tires the width is 66" the dlr says a 60"(5') box blade will do fine , the question shoiuld i get a 66" box blade (5'6") to fit the tires what will happen or can it work with a 5' box blade, and ohh by the way is a grader blade or box blade the thing to get please let me know what you think

There is a recent thread here on grader blades vs. box blades. I think the consensus was box blades, but check for yourself. Won't the L3010 accomodate a 6' box blade? If it will then your concerns are moot. Get the 6' model and you're covered. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

If it's the machine I'm thinking it is, I don't think you'd have a problem but I'd suggest you check with your dealer on that to be sure.

If that's not a good option for you, ask JimMc on here. He's the engineer for First Choice and I'd about bet he can tell you.

Can you give us a little more information as to what you want to do with a boxblade and the soil conditions in your area. My first reaction is go for the 6’ box blade. The L3010 is a large frame machine that should hold traction well enough and that is the issue more than power. I use a 5’ box blade on my B21 (21hp) with out much trouble. Most of my use is on hard packed gravel and red clay. This time of year our roads are like concrete and I don’t even try. During wetter seasons I can pull a full box of gravel and maintain traction unless I am pulling up a grade. In that case I take a smaller bite and make another pass. For dirt work I would be unhappy with a boxblade that was narrower than the tractor tires.

I also have a rear blade but prefer the boxblade for most things. Others on the forum have better luck with a rear blade so I think it depends on what you do. One thing to keep in mind is that you can generally go with a wider rear blade than boxblade. The blade will not be moving as much material and you also want to be able to angle it and still be wider than you tires. I use a 6’ blade on my tractor.

I started out with a Landpride 72" RBB and it worked great. I was pulling it with a 1956 JD model 40W. The box blade extended out past each rear tire by about 3".
Since then, I traded the old girl in for a JD4300 w/ r4's. At the time I thought the 72" rbb was a little too much for my 4300 so I traded it even up for the next smaller size. The 60"rbb still extends out past the r4's but not enough. Recently I excavated an area for a walkway that had many curves. It became very difficult to cut the curves I wanted to so I had to remove more material than needed. Had the rbb extended further out, like my original 72" I could have cut my curves where I wanted them. Hope this helps

6' box blade should work fine behind an L3010, I'd say that is the route to go.

I've a 3410GST 4WD, R-4 tires and a 6' box blade. While true that I've a bit more hp, I run out of traction before I ever load the engine (i.e., power). You'll do fine with a 6' - so what if you have to raise the blade occasionally, or smooth an area with 2 passes rather than 1 - you'll not have to see your rear tire tracks over everything you do.

I've been told that ANY additional length makes a difference, so I would guess 6" would make a significant difference!
