Just wanted to post to say that I have been fairly successful at getting good deals on used implements at a local rental dealer. Seems like they replace items after a few years and they are still plenty useable. Today a bought a 48" Landpride boxscaper for $300 and the new price is $560. Nothing at all wrong with it. Earlier this year I picked up a 1998 Woods tiller for $1000 (list price $2050). Just an idea for those who are looking for used items. I know that rental items are used hard, but check them out-heck ask them if you can rent it before buying and if you like it then apply the cost to the purchase. That's the deal I made on the tiller.

Other than auctions I've had good luck in my dealers backlot for trade in items. It helps to shop for these during the busy season because they don't have the time to go over them with a fresh coat of paint and you can see the real condition of the implement. Most dealers also rent so that is another option as well

The rental yards usually buy heavy duty and they are pretty hard to tear up. So you get the best of both worlds a good piece of equipment at a reasonable price. Can't ask for more than that. The reason I don't have a tiller is price but sounds like you stold that one./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I've had pretty good luck purchasing from rental dealers, at least on items where defects are easily determined VISUALLY. Examples...

Landscape Rake: I purchased a 6 foot landscape rake in really good shape for $75 (they seldom rented it out). I had rented it myself about 2 years earlier.

Yard Box: I purchased a 5 foot Landpride yard box that had two missing scratifiers (is that what you call them?) and the slot that they fit into was broke (it'll require some welding to fix). Otherwise, it was in really good shape for $50. I mainly use it for FEL counter-balance; when using the yard box I usually use it with the scratifiers (teeth) up. So far it has been well worth the money to me.

They had some tillers for sale but they were too expensive for me to gamble on.

Yeah, can't we all use a bigger shed. I actually live in the mountains at 6500' elevation so we're usually pretty cool, but darn this summer -it's still hitting 80 during the day (45 at night). Don't know if fall is gonna come or not.

Your at 6500' /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif than you must get a taste of the winds durning summer and winter.

I've had no luck at all finding used implements for a decent price. I tried the dealers backlot for trade in items and he wanted new prices for used stuff. I ended up getting a new 6' blade and rear scoop at Quality Farm and Fleet on sale for what the dealer wanted for used ones. I haven't tried the rental places though, so I'll give them a try. Auctions seemed like a good idea until I spent nearly a whole Saturday at one only to watch the stuff go for 3/4 the price of new stuff, so maybe when I'm retired and have the time it will be the way to go, but right now I'd rather save the time and pay the price of new stuff and get a warranty!
