PTO pump[crazy] ?

Yep, I'm nuts /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif, but I'm wondering if anyone has found other uses for PTO pumps.
I've been playing with the idea of building a windmill to pump water from a rainwater collection system to irrigate my crops(through a drip irrigation system); could I rig up an old PTO pump to do the job?
I know this isn't exactly tractor-related, other than the part about a PTO pump, but you guys always have good ideas on these nutty kinds of questions! /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif

I think that anytime you can get something for nothing, my ears always perk up.
this sounds like a great idea but I don't think a pto pump designed to pump oil would work for pumping water but I could be wrong. viscosity, oil vs. water first comes to mind. also, seals being contaminated by water. I'm sure there are many pumps on the market that you could adapt that are designed to pump water.
The concept sounds great as I am in the same predicament. Interested in hearing from the real experts on TBN

Sorry, Kevin in MI, I meant to say the pump is a PTO mounted pump; my father-in-law has one he sometiimes uses to pump water from his pond.

I see, a pto mounted water pump. Then my only concern would be, does the windmill provide adequate rpms? If not, maybe some sort of gear box driven by the windmill that powers the pump.

Yep, that's my question too--would the rpm's be sufficient to power the pump without a gearbox?

If you have a windmill why not put in a manual pump. The old timers pumped many gallons of water this way. It would be relatively cheap and low maintenance. Lehmans (sp?) Amish store out of Ohio has a catalog of all the parts you need. I will see if I still have their address if your interested.

This a great topic. My concern would be adequate pressure. My drip irrigation systems delivers 2 gpm by inserting a flow regulator. My line has 50 emitters spaced 5' apart. The whole system requires garden hose pressure. 40-50psi. Could this manual pump have enough umph to fill an elevated tank? Then gravity might be enough to provide adequate pressure

did i open a can of worms, or what! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif i'm using a T-Tape drip irrigation system with emitters spaced 10" apart; right now, i have about 2,000' of T-Tape in use. T-Tape puts the water right where i want it so i don't use as much water, but it's still more than i like to pump from my well. I am working on a rainwater
harvesting/collection system(that's a whole other story) which will give me several hundred gallons of water which I intend to somehow pump to my field. I don't want to run an electrical connection all the way to the field, and thought if they could pump water with windmills in the old days, why can't I do it now?
sorry this isn't exactly along the lines of a tractor discussion, but I appreciate everyone's input anyway!

Sorry, I don't know how high a windmill can pump water. The above mentioned sites could answer your questions. The Lehman catalog gives more info. than the web site. The other sites are a wealth of information. Good luck, I hope this helped a little.
