I have found 4 JD 71 Planters in a local farmers barn. I am contemplating buying then and Building a two row planter. He'll give me a better deal on all 4 and then I can sell the other two to someone else.

Questions:

Does the toolbar have to be solid bar for a two row planter or can it be 2x2x1/4" tubing???

Anybody figured out a way yet to add fertilize to a JD 71??? (Farminwithjunk)

I called Holland Transplanter and they have a ground driven system, but I don't know the price yet. Probably way more than I want to spend.

I would add liquid if I knew how to set up a system. I can buy the liquid coultors off ebay for about $75.00 each and have a local source for liquid fertilizer. I could buy a tank etc... and set up a system if I knew how to regulate it.

I plan to plant about 10 acres of field corn to pick with the New Idea 323 and sell as ear corn. Not looking to get rich, but make a little money.

I have a covington tp46 that I planted with last year, but it's not accurate enough and I want to be able to plant in 30" rows.

Dry fertilizer kit is available from Gandy. The square tubing will work just fine for your tool bar, and if you choose to use liquid fertilizer, the volume is regulated by the orifices you put in your hoses.

I live right across town from you, and i am interested in one or two the planters you have. i have lots of metal. i can fabricate and weld also. maybe we could work something out.

My FIL wants to look at the planters first. I told him that I had found 4 and he told me that he might be interested in 1 or 2. We bought a corn picker (New Idea 323) together last year. We've now found a PTO sheller (going to get it over Christmas) and we're going this weekend to get two (one each) farm wagons.

I'll let you know as soon as he looks at the planters.

I went and got the planters last night. They are in fairly good shape. I do need a couple springs and T bars for one though. I also need a decal to go on the seed hopper on one.

The hoppers all have lids and they are not cracked. The fiberglass is in good shape.

Now it's time to break out the wire brush, DA sander and sandpaper. Will it hurt to sandblast the planters???

I know that the Hopper Drive housing is aluminum so I'll sand that by hand.

The serial #'s of the planters I bought start with 233xxx on two of the planters and I think 238xxx on the other two. He did tell me two were newer. Anybody got an idea what year model they are???


I'll try to post pictures tonight.

My FIL is coming Saturday to look at the two that I want to sell. I'll let you know something by Monday.

Important note on the planter, the disks mounting bolts turn two differant ways, one is clockwise and one is counter clockwise, I broke one, talked to the JD dealer about the problem I was having about getting it apart to paint and no one said anything until I broke one.

Then everyone said I should have told you about that.

Gotcha. One LH and one RH.

Did you completely disassemble your planter to paint it??? These don't have a lot of rust, but some of the springs have rust. Some rust on the disc openers ect... Basically they look like you would expect 20-30 year old planters to look.

I would really like them to look like the ones the guys on ebay sell when I get done.


On Edit: I just looked at your post. Actually they almost look in the exact same condition as yours.

Yep we wanted ours to look good also, we took them apart and pulled the chains and gears and took them to a car wash and put simple green on them and washed them clean. Then we just painted them up. The seed cans we have are the metal ones and we sanded them down and then painted them.

We also took apart the wheels and sanded them down and panted them up. We need to put the decals on in the spring and I still need to mount a support leg, you can see in our photos I used a 4"x6" tool bar for ours.

We replaced all the plastic parts and put new chains on ours. I've got the parts for the monitor system just need to mount it also.
