Thanks Dumbdog,
No doubt that experience is the best teacher. I'm grateful for the reply. I really need to find something to cut the creek bank. I could keep it looking great if I had the right mower. Thanks again. Kent

It looks like Newholland is the only game in town. I see you already have a NH tractor, so maybe you have a dealer to call for price, or run an ad looking for a used one.

Steelfan - What I mean is that if you come to a tree or something you have to start turning way in advance. Plus, since the bar sticks way out it's hard to judge how close it is to something. For example, you might think you're going to miss a tree, but instead you're 3 inches off and will hit it, then you have to back up. Backing up a pull behind sickle mower would be tricky.

I don't know what they go for, but a local equipment dealer had about 8 of the 3pt, pto driven, gearbox type on his lot a month or so ago. I can't understand why the new ones go for so much since there shouldn't be much of a demand for them. Farmers used to use them exclusively before the haybine came on the scene about 25 years ago. They don't use them any more, so I would think there should be quite a few out there used. Now these were probably 7 or 9 footers - way too long for a compact tractor.

Seems to me that a guy with good torch and welding skills could take a 7' sickle and cut it down to whatever length he wanted. I had the pleasure of many hours of seat time on an 8N sickle mowing about 25 acres when I was a kid. It aint no fun! But with a modern compact and the right size sickle it should be OK. Besides, I just love the look of a sickle mown field.

According to Newholland, their model 451 7' sicklebar only requires 20 hp to operate.

I use an old John Deere #5 7 foot sickle mower on my 28 hp Kubota, I just got done mowing 80 acres of thick hay last week with it no problem at all just lots of time, I can go pretty fast, it doesn't bother the tractor at all, I have way more than enough power, just make sure you have new guards and sickle sections and a spare pitman around, it should work great. Thanks for the Reply Danny, and everyone else. I'm grateful for all the information. I'd hate to found out that it doesn't do what I want it to after I bought it. Thanks again. Kent

Kent, sounds like you've gotten some good advice here. Time to find a dealer & convince him to bring a unit to your ditch so you can try it out. Be sure to take some pictures, helps pass the day at work when I can't see big blue.

I saw an offset rotary cutter the other day. I think it was made by woods. It was mounted to a Utilitiy tractor. It was mounted to the three point & had a wheel just outboard of the tractor that it rode on. The cutter extended beyond the wheel. It looked to be able to pivot up & down. It did not have any ballast box that I saw, maybe the wheel kept the thing from tipping the tractor.

Great idea, Hazmat./w3tcompact/icons/clever.gif I wasn't able to get online for a few days. I may call the dealer Monday for a price. Thanks Kent

I read your post and remembered a customer that I deliver to. I stopped by his place the other day and he has a very very little tractor with a three point hitch mounted pto to belt drive sickle bar about 5 foot long. It had a HABINE RACINE

RACINE WISC sticker on it. Was white in color. You may do some searching in the Racine Wisconsin area if the manufacture is still in business. It was really cute.
