I have skidded logs for many years with with skidding tongs chained to my drawbar. My method is cheap. A medium size skidding tong costs about $50. Plus skidding tongs allow you to lift the butt of the log closer to the center of gravity of the rear axel so your front end is less prone to get light. Skidding tongs will allow you to dedicate more actual lifting performance. The grapple due to its length will compromise your actual lifting capacity. Skidding tongs, however, are a bit slower than 3pt hydralic log grapple. Ya have to get off the tractor to set the dogs into the trunk before lifting.
A hydralic grapple might be worth the money if you were skidding a massive quantity of logs on any given day. If you are just moving a few logs a day. Not worth the money or degrade in lifting capacity.
