185 Hydro John Deere
Hi everyone,
I just bought a 316 John Deere with a leaf shreader and bagger. And also a rear PTO drive installed. I have 15 acres of land and want to get a tiller for the tractor so i need to know what i need to get on the tractor to get a tiller working and installed. Im new at this so any help will be appriecated. Also what is a good price to pay for this tractor to know if i got a good deal or not.
Thanks

I have the same question, so hopefully someone can chime in. I'm a little confused as to what the options are on my new procured 316 (Onan). While it has rear hydraulic lift, the drive appears to be a mechanical shaft coming out the back of the transfer case. The "mechanical" drive tillers I've seen appear to connect to the drive for the mower deck via pulley (not what I'm looking for). I'm assuming that a tiller exists that connects to that shaft drive in some way, but I'm honestly not sure and haven't had any luck figuring it out. I sincerely appreciate any info that folks can pass along.

Deere makes a 42 inch hydraulic tiller that I THINK will be the about the best set-up for your 316. I know it worked great on the 318's. They still sell them for the X400, 500, and 700 series tractors for $2359 retail. Your dealer should be able to fix you up.

If I'm not mistaken, the 318 has rear hydraulic attachment which would drive that tiller. The 316 does not. If the hoses run up to the front, then I guess it could drive a rear tiller in that fashion.

I used to have a 318 and son has a 316. The 318 does have rear hyd ports and 316 doesn't.

Seem to recall when I first got my 318 I asked about a tiller. They were hyd powered, no mech tiller available. Also seem to recall the tiller required it own pump driven from the rear pto shaft. The stock rear hyd on the 318 doesn't have the flow capacity to run the tiller.

If available, buying a new tiller for these old machines is not economical IMO. You'd have more money wrapped up in the tiller than the tractor is worth. And if the OP had in mind to till most of those 15 acres mentioned, IMO that's biting off more than that set up was intended to handle unless you have all the time in the world and soil not overly hard/packed.

My cousin had one 15 years ago and sold it to a friend of ours. The hydraulics were all on the tiller and a v-belt from the tractor powered it. I had a 318 and there were no hydraulics on the rear of it. I don't remember any quick-couplers for hydraulics at all on the tractor.

But don't trust my memory, lord knows I don't.

EDIT : I just remembered that it did have some quick-couplers in front by the bumper maybe.

15 acres is a lot to till.

2*The 318 Came standard with a rear pto and hyd lift if i remember correctly and the 316 did not.
You need both on the 316 for a tiller .
It appers that someone installed the rear hyd lift before you got the 316 but they did not install the rear pto.

*It may be $2359 for an X series an more like
$3500 for the older out of production 316. If there is even a tiller still available for them .
Also an X series tiller may not even fit a 316.

If I'm not mistaken, the 318 has rear hydraulic attachment which would drive that tiller.
The 318 has a rear 3 point hitch not a rear hydraulic attachment.
It also has a rear pto .

1*I think it would be like throwing money away on an old out of production tractor.
Also Onan is out of business meaning engine parts are hard to come by and very expensive when and if you do.
2*An out of production tractor with an engine manuf that's out of business .Not a good combination for a tiller investment.
3*I agree .

Not sure where you heard that Onan was out of business. They are a Div of Cummins and have been for a number of years. Cummins Onan

The flat twin has been out of production for close to 10 yrs. Parts prices have always been on the spendy side and as time passes it is getting more so. Still 10's of thousands of RV genset with the flat twin. As long as there is a large base of these genset with sim/same engine, there will be a source for parts.

But still IMO spending big bucks on these old machines doesn't make a lot of $ence.

Can anyone tell me what is all involved with installing a rear pto shaft for the purpose of adding a rear tiller on my 2006 john deere x475. I am mechanicaly inclined and am looking at installing it myself. Am in the dark cuz never done one before. How many parts are involved and what is the price tag for getting this completed? Thanks, Stump
