Rotary Cutter Woods or LandPride rotary cutter?

Hey guys, looking to buy a rotary cutter in the new few weeks. Either a 42" or a 48". Its going on my BX2660. The landpride is model RCR1542. The woods is model RCC42. Any opinions on what one might be a better buy? Whats strange is the woods cutter weighs in at 350lb, while the land pride is a stout 432lb. That doesnt make sense to me since the woods has 11 guage frame and the Landpride has 12 guage. Both have the same gearbox rating (50hp). Both are available in Kubota orange.

I want to make the purchase soon, before the significant other spends all our tax rebate money!!!

edit: I can get the landpride for a better price, $849 vs. $1,300 for the Woods.

For the price difference, I would go with the Land Pride. I have a 8" Land Pride cutter for the past five years and have had no issues with it. Definitely sturdy.

Side benefit is you are benefitting the Kansas economy with Land Pride....

I suggest you go with the 48" cutter. With almost 20 PTO HP, you have the power to use the 48" machine.
I also have a LandPride cutter (60" unit) and I can recommend them. Woods builds excellent equipment too (my chipper is a Woods). Either would be a great choice.

I have two Landpride rcr2572 units that I use commercially. I put about 400 hours a season on each and have had no problems with either one, mechanically or structurally. They have been really good units.

When I had my JD 750, I ran a LandPride 15-48 4ft bush hog behind it for many years and it was tough as nails. Would not hesitate to get another one either. Can't comment on the Woods since I've not owned one, but they are usually regarded as quality units. The one caveat is their Heritage series is the low end model and it's not going to hold up as well as the top end models.

I run a landpride 15-48 behind my BX 2230 and it has been one tough machine.I use it to feild mow 6 acres of uncut feild' I don't start cutting it till end of july so it is high,resist going to fast .Also use it through out my 6 acres of woods chopping up under brush to 2" dia small tree's.Have even sat her down on some half rotted stumps and with a little time turned them to mulch.Take your time and be carefull where you go the that weight hanging out the back. I'd make sure your model #of landpride or woods your looking at has low lift arms hook up point's for your BX with low tire's.Mine came with 2 locations to put pins which is nice for a BX. For me it would be a landpride, but hear good things about woods just never owned one

Thanks for all the comments guys! I called the dealer today and they are holding me one (Landride 48". They even said it came with the slipper clutch over the sheer pin. I think that was optional? Anyways, they are going to assemble it for a bx before I get it (driveshaft, lift arms, etc). Im excited. Hopefully I can get out there in a week or two to pick it up (2 hours away).

I would assume I would need my front end loader on it to counter act all that weight in the back?

You'll need the loader or front weights (probably around 150 lbs) especially if you intend to transport the cutter raised on the 3ph. Even with the loader or weights, make turns slowly when that cutter is raised. That's a lot of weight extended far behind your tractor.
I use the loader myself. For one thing, I have it and also it knocks down any brush before I mow it.
If you haven't mowed this field before, take it real slow the first time. You never know what might be under that brush.
As far as protective gear, use hearing and eye protection. You may also want a mask to filter out the dust too.

I dont know about either one as a new model, but my granfather bought a Woods Billy Goat 48" rotary mower in the 1960's. We still use it today, the deck has been repaired a time or two and needs some work again. The gear box has never given up. Woods used to build a tough mower, I hope they still do as that is the brand I will buy if I ever need a new one.
