hello, I am rebuilding my dunham cultipacker, new 3 pt frame, 4 bolt flange bearings, old shaft.
the shaft measures 1 11/16, but is worn, I am going to use it till it breaks then replace.
should I buy the 1 3/4 bearings or 1 11/16 ( bearings have set screws )
is it easier to get a 1 3/4 shaft then a 1 11/16
I figured the 1 3/4 bearings if the shaft breaks I would get a new one at 1 3/4
what do you think? thanks dennis

I noticed some of the cultipackers had wood bearings as I have been browsing the internet. The old ford dearborn disks also used wood bearings. Years ago my grandpa had a cordwood saw that just used 2 posts set in the ground with the arbor hole drilled and ran it off a flat belt. The saw had an oil hole drilled from the top down to shaft/bearing. Doen't seem like much finess, but may be just be good-nuff. Sure wouldn't be hard to replace, just a couple pieces of oak or some other hardwood sandwiched between some metal plate and you have a new bearing. All the wood bearings I have seen used had arrangements for lubrication, either grease zerks or an oil hole. I doubt you intend doing large acreages with you packer. Just so somebody don't read this and make a saw like grandpa's. He had his posts well braced. I don't remember him ruining a bearing, but if he did he could just move up or down the post with a new hole/bearing.
