I have been viewing this website for a while but have not yet posted a question, this is my first. I can't believe what a wealth of knowledge is found here. I have learned alot. Thanks in advance.

I am currently in the market for a disk harrow (DH) for my JD 790 (27 HP Tractor with front end loader and R4 tires). I'm leaning toward a 5'9" Leinbach 300s 16 20 Disk Harrow. It weighs about 695 lbs. My main question is, are the 20" disks on this DH too large to be sufficiently lifted by my tractor (because of heighth). I would prefer 18" disks but haven't found any in my area. What are the advantages of using the 20s over the 18s if they are usable on this tractor. Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated. I live in a rural area of N. Florida with sandy loam soil. Some rock is close to the surface.

Thanks again

I have a kitoi ck 20 which i think is smaller then your tractor. It is puling a woods dbh5 Woods Equipment Company - 60'', 72'', & 84'' Medium-Duty Disc Harrows - DHM Series
. If you want a good heavy disc that cuts good this the one to have. i replaced my lienbach that you are talking about because it did not work as good as this one. Also i am pulling an old john deere 22X12 ofset with the same tractor. Hope this helps

My personal feeling is to go with a 16 X 16 or a 20 X 16. This will give a lot better finish on your field than 20 inch blades. Ken Sweet

Well, the 20" disk will cut deeper for one thing, and deeper cutting usually indicates that the soil is getting turned over and burying what was on top better. But then again the 20" set will be that much harder to pull. I don't know if your tractor will pull the 20" set.

I am having one heck of a time responding/posting on this forum. My last try. I just spent about 30 minutes writing a response, submitted it, I thought, and the page it went to indicated I was no longer logged in. Not sure what I did wrong. Here is a shorter version.

Dark, nice Woods DH in the link. But the 5' won't be wide enough to cover my tracks, any heavier than yours and I'm headed towards my 3PH lift limit, which is I think, just north of 800lbs surprisingly, as I remember. My tractor lacks in weight for pulling a heavy disk because of the sandy soil in the area I think. The HP would be ok but traction problems may result after the first pass even with loader and 4X4 possibly. Thats why I kinda liked the Linebaugh 300s. It looks like the gang angle can be adjusted fairly quickly to a lesser angle if traction becomes a problem. The weight was about what I thought was right, about 700lbs.

I don't think I felt very confident about the 20" disks though, otherwise I probably wouldn't have asked the question. All of you have helped me decide to look for a DH with 16" or 18" disks max. Again, thank you for all your time and advice.

Thanks for the link Dirt. And, I had no problem with responding this AM. I checked the "Remember me" box as you said.

I wrote that piece on the KK disc (with 18" blades) above. I later adjusted the disc to a lesser cut angle and removed the log weight. I may have compromised how deeply I was discing...but the disc did a nicer job and I really didn't need as deep of tillage as I originally thought.

I like the way I have it set up now. The rear gangs are set a little less angle than the fronts. It took a little time to adjust it....but I am happy with this disc. Still.....I use my tiller whenever possible in lieu of the disc.

As has been said.....the biggest problem is not power .....but rather the traction to pull the disc. Those tires you have (industrial) are not going to help you. That's where a tiller shines on these light tractors.....no traction requirements.

Foggy,

I went down to TSC store today. They used to sell KK but now have Countyline products. They look the same as the KKs to me but prettier, if thats the right word. Better paint. The 5 box frame units they have are all 6 1/2'. A worker there told me they were not going to be getting any 5 1/2' DH's (Box frame). I checked the TSC website, they weren't showing any, just the 6 1/2 box frame Countyline DH.

Those things (6 1/2) appear to be stout built, and heavy with a big H. Having used the 5 1/2, which appears to be stout built also by your picture, would the 6 1/2 be too big for your tractor, regarding lift weight and pulling ability in your conditions which appear similar to mine? If you don't think you could use it with yours I know i couldn't use it with mine, especially with the R4s and less HP (27). The 6 1/2 DH box frames are $1099 at the store. Tillers were $1599.00 (60") I think. The website specified $1699 for the same size tiller.

I had to order my 5 1/2 footer though an implement dealer. I paid $850 for it last year....and thought that it was a better price than thru TSC (who did not stock a disc) or Northern Hydraulics (another KK source).

I dont know why these guys dont stock the smaller disc.....as I think most of these smaller tractors are better suited with this size than the larger ones. These little tractors stuggle unless they have enough weight.

Personally, I think the 5 1/2 footer is about the limit for these tractors....but so much depends on soil types and your expectations on how a disc should perform. Some guys think a disc should only be a secondary tillage implement....others think of it as primary. In my case....I want to work some ground that is too rough for my tiller and / or too rocky or full of stumps. I want about 4 to 6" of ground penetration.

If your following a plow....you may be happy with the bigger disc. (?) But I think the bigger disc (6 1/2 footer) is likely gonna be a big load for your tractor to my way of thinking.

I beleive I would get somebody to order a disc for you unless you need it real soon (?) ;)
