I have a John Deere Van Brunt grain drill that I thought I might be able to restore to the point that we could use it at my hunt club to seed some of our food plots with. Well, I don't really have anywhere to park it out of the rain, and I don't think I'm going to be able to devote the time and attention it needs to become a functioning unit so I'm thinking about putting it up for sale. I really hate to see it go to waste sitting in the yard. It really needs a fair amount of work, so I should consider that in the price. On the other hand, it's a 7x9 drill (about 7ft wide with 9 seed drop chutes) and I'm told this size of drill is very hard to come by now so that might add to the value. I will attach a couple pic's for you to judge it with. They were taken right after it was pulled out of a barn, it's been sitting out in the weather for about 8 months, so it doesn't look quite as good now. What would your asking price be?

In our area it used to be that you could buy bigger Van Brunt drills that were field ready in the $150-$450 range depending on tires, paint, and tightness of seed openers and linkages. Now days I have seen them bring up to $850 and looked like they had been drug through a rathole backwards due to people wanting them for food plot seedings. Can you give an idea of what repairs it needs? This might help to price it. These small ones like you have are few and far between.

Need a photo showing the inside of the box so we can see the condition of the feed cups. That will tell how much refurbishment is needed.

Larger JD/VBs (7-17, etc) go for $200-500 on eBay.

Last year I restored an old Minneapolis Moline P3-6 grain drill (10 ft wide, 20 drops on 6" spacing). It was a 2-month job and I had a second P3-6 to use for spare parts.

I used this drill to plant 5 acres of Kanota oats last Nov.

With a little TLC, these old drills can still put in a good day's work.

If the Ferterlize box had all the parts to make it work and the seed box was functional with good drop tubes, you would be looking at $700-$1000. Missing a lot of parts $100-$200--Ken Sweet

Well, I sold the drill yesterday. :( Didn't really want to but it was for the best, it was just going to waste sitting in my parent's yard. I think the buyer will be able to spend some time and a little bit of money on it and get it going again. I did have to put two used 16" tires on it before he picked it up. That sure made it alot easier to roll as compared to sitting on two rotten tires. :) We didn't have too much trouble loading it lengthwise onto his 16' trailer. I used my loader to pick up one end of the drill, and then he backed the end of the trailer underneath that tire (he had removed his drive on tailgate). We then reattached the strap to the other tire and picked up the opposite end of the drill. After that, it was a matter of backing the trailer under it and inching the drill forward onto the trailer bit by bit with some 2x4's and manpower. Thank goodness he brought a couple guys with him! They dogged it down with some 3" racheting straps and headed back home.

Oh yeah, I got $250 for it. Considering it was given to me and I had nothing in it (other than $30 to get my two used tires mounted on the rims, so I came out alright!
