Default What size disc (IH 826)

I need to buy a disc for a some brome I want to plant this spring. I am going to burn the field and cut the trees, and grind any of the stumps over about 2". The neighbor has a planter he's going to let me use, but I need to disc everything first. What size should I be looking for?

I have my reservations how well any disc will work in those conditions. The ground is going to be difficult to turn under unless the disc is fairly heavy. What I use sometimes, is a disc in the 21-23' range with wings. Leave the wings folded up and should have 13-15' wide disc that your 826 (preferably with duals) should be able to pull. Burning off the trash will help the disc dig better. The stumps are going to be hard on any disc. The blades will tend to lift and ride over the stumps. Running a planter/drill over the stumps is going to be even worse. How big are the stumps? Anything larger than 3-4" maybe a problem. Can the stumps be bull dozed or removed by back hoe?

The biggest of the stumps will be about 5-6 " in diameter, but I'll grind them at least 6" below the surface of the soil with a stump grinder. There are only about two that will be that large in the whole field. There are lots of hedge and locust trees about 1-1.5" in diameter. I thought I'd cut these flush and forget about them. The stummps can be treated differently, but I'm having a hard time justifying the expense.

I do not have duals for the tractor.

I was thinking a 12' to 14' disc would be about right - I suppose you are agreeing?

    My 806 (100 H.p.) pulls a 14' disc with no problem.
I'm thinking your 826 is simular in power.

Rather than leave the stumps, just pull them out with your 826. Traction might be an issue, but with such small stumps, you should be okay. Leaving tree stumps in a field isn't a good idea. I'm a believer in the old saying that anything worth doing is worth doing right. Leaving stumps in the field... that isn't doing it right.

Way back in the day, we had a 14' disc we pulled with our 856. We used duals, so I can't comment on the performance without them, but it worked fine for us. A 12' disc would probably be your best bet.
