When I bought this disk a few weeks ago, I had no idea who made it , age or anything. I just knew it was old and rusty. Thanks to some folks here on the forum, I learned that it was an old John Deere KBL 5 foot disk made approximately mid 1950's. I was really impressed with the design and craftsmanship, so decided to restore it. Since that time, I have also discovered that many folks find this a desirable collector item. I can see why, but that was not my motovation to restore it. Its close to my own age, and can't resist .

Anway, here is a pictorial of progress, from initial purchase, priming and finish coat. Plus a lot of wire brushing, sand blasting, pressure washing, sanding and other prep work in between. I'm using Valspar Tractor and Implement Enamel from Tractor Supply, and Valspar oil based Metal Red Oxide Primer. And color of John Deere Green of course.

Initial Arrival:

Primer coat:

Finish Coat:

After several days of drying, I'll reassemble and post a pic of the assembled KBL disk. Hope someone enjoys them.

Looking good! I know you'll be proud of it after you're finished, and you'll have rescued a nice disc harrow that will last you for as long as you want to keep it. I doubt you'll be getting rid of it anytime soon though! Be sure to post some finished pic's when you're done.

Here is a picture of the disc scrapper up close. There are rights and lefts and ends. I think I have the cast pieces, however, only 2 or 3 good blades. I have fabricated the flat blades with no problem. Ken Sweet

I'll promise you that disc is built better than just about anything you could go
out and buy new today. Great to see someone saving some ol' implements.

Nice job!

And here are some sitting on blocks by itself. It was challenging. Was it worth it? Well, who knows, but it kept me busy.

Wow, that's to pretty to use! Looks really good. Wonder what that weighs? What will you use it for? A garden, food plots??? It will be interesting to see how it works, but a shame to get it dirty!

Thanks. I would guess about 600 pounds. I use a disk mainly to help in some blackberry vine control and some other woody type plants, plus for smoothing. An example is the day I bought this particular disk, since I already had it and my tractor on the trailer, I went straight to my land and disked some wild hog ruts out a little to smooth the ruts out. I sure did like the way this disk cut and layed down the soil behind it, and without any added weights.

For my garden plot at the house, I use a 60 inch PTO tiller. Couldn't imagine anything better.
