I'm having trouble removing the blade on an old brush hog. The mower is a 5 ft Pasture Dream Clipper made by Taylor Machine Works. I'd be afraid to guess how old it is, I bought it used 20 years ago and it looked very old then. The blade bar has a sleeve on top that fits on the shaft that comes out of the gear box. A heavy bolt goes up through the bottom of the blade bar into the shaft. I've never had the blade bar off but I assume there is either a key way or splines to keep the sleeve/blade bar from turning on the drive shaft. While under the deck to sharpen the blades I noticed a crack in the sleeve which I'm hoping can be repaired by welding. I can get a socket on the bolt that goes up through the bade bar, but it will not budge, even when using a cheater bar. I'm assuming the bolt is right hand threads, but maybe they are left handed. Anyone have any suggestions?

You might have to heat it but don't do this unless you plan on replacing the seal.

I'd first get a 3/4" drive breakover bar and a put a 3-4 foot cheater on that.

Assuming you can't get an impact wrench to it, have you tried "tapping" your breaker bar; sometimes I can break something loose I can't get with constant pressure. If you do, use an impact socket.

And agree, longer cheater bar often will do the trick; won't mention the other methods I've used.

I suggest a set of torches and plenty of heat. I'm afraid the bolt would break without heat.

I also would try heat and if the seal leaks, it should be easy to replace. Ken Sweet

My vote is for lots of PB Blaster or Kroil and impact wrench.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll try again this weekend.

Did youever get this fixed? I have a Clipper 5" mower - it is a 3/4 fine thread left hand bolt - if you break it, you probably will not be able to find it anywhere. It is an old Warner grarbox and parts are not available.

FWIW, I have had good luck finding left hand threaded nuts and bolts on Ebay. Just bought a 5/8" fine thread hex nut for $2.22 delivered. Ken Sweet
