Is it crazy to try and row crop that amount of acreage with with the Kioti and some kind of old seed drill?
I do not have the seed drill yet. Any recomendations on what size and/or model? I would not mind having to refurbish the drill assuming it would be reasonably reliable and not end up costing what a new drill would cost.
If an old/used seed drill is not advisable what is the most reasonably priced new drill?

I guess it depends on how much time you want to spend on the tractor. That'll be a lot of time plowing, disking, and planting.

You can pay anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand bucks for used drills. I bought a pair of old Minneapolis Moline P3-6 drills from a neighbor for $275 bucks (10 ft wide, 20 drops, 6 inch row spacing, single disc openers) with grass boxes. It took me about a month to rebuild one of these into working order using parts from both drills.



I only have 10 acres total. Last Nov I used the drill to plant 5 acres of Kanota oats. The job took about 2 hours. The drill worked fine.

The field has been row cropped for decades. In the last 10-12 years it has been alternated between corn and cotton with one year of milo. Being able to drill grass seed would be nice as well.
Actually I should also mention I have never done this before. ;o}

That's a 2008 Mahindra 5525 (54 hp engine, 45 hp pto, 2WD, gear tranny), which is overkill for pulling that grain drill. I probably could have pulled the drill with my 1951 Farmall Super A with no problems, but that tractor isn't set up with rear hydraulics that I need for the drill (I added the hydraulic ram when I rebuilt the drill).

Yep, that MM drill has a pair of grass seed boxes attached to the front of the big box which is used for granular fertilizer and large seed crops like oats.

Your project is easily doable. Back when that size tractor looked after a whole pile more acres.

Tillage and seeding equipment should be doable.
Harvesting equipment at reasonable prices may be the deciding point.

Like others said it depends on how much time you want to spend on the tractor. How will you harvest corn? Pay to have it combined. If grass what will you harvest the milo with, cut the hay and then bail your wheat whatever? Sure you can prep and plant but that is only part of it. You may end up paying more than its worth if you have to lease the harvest out, but i dont do this so i have no idea. Think about subsistence farmers that use to farm that acerage or double that with farmal cubs that were 7-9hp. Or a farmer farming 75 acres with a ford 8n (~23-26hp). It is doable but all depends on like others said how long you want to spend at it. But those farmers probly did not have another job that they went to from 8-4 like i assume you do, unless your retired.

If you can swing the initial cost, go with a "no till" planter as you can plant a variety of crops with it and eliminate the cost of ground preparation.

Just as an aside, we have the land and equipment to farm several hundred acres, but find it more profitable to cash rent and much less stressful. I still love operating equipment, but not if my income depends on it in any part. Good luck with whatever you decide.
