Default disc mower bad choice for non-hay mowing?

Still agonizing over the best mower choice for me & my customers that aren't haying their land.
I have several plots anywhere from 1-10 acres. Just tall grass 2-4' high they want rough cut 4X/year. Using an old 6' bush hog now. Really needs replaced.
Would love a disc mower, I have my eye on a used Krone ($3,000), but concerned it will chop the grass off real low, then leave unsightly stalks laying there.
I know a flail is my best choice because it will cut the stalks into small pieces, but can't find an 8' straight flail that's affordable.
    Love the disc mower, though.

The brush hog or flail mower seems to be logical choices. I don't think a sickle or disc mower would be acceptable for the reason you mentioned. Ken Sweet

If your customers are satisfied with the cut from your 6' hog, why not just replace it with another 6-footer or maybe step up in size to a larger dual blade brush hog. You probably could fit one of these into a $3K budget. If your tractor can handle an 8ft flail, it should be able to handle maybe a 10-ft dual blade hog.

My father in law tried a disc mower several years ago and kept it less than a week and bought a new Woods rotary cutter.

A disc mower will leave the grass lay on top and after a week the stubble is growing up through the layed down grass. After a couple weeks the field looks great.

However, I wouldn't use a disc mower for just cutting fields like your wanting. They are very expensive to repair and do not take abuse like a brush chopper would. I cut one 10 acre field for a local guy with my discbine but it is a hay field I have cut before. I don't need the hay so he pays me to just mow the field down. I use a brush chopper on my own fields though that I just chop for maintance. I don't want to risk damaging my discbine by running it on ground its not needed.

I had an inclination to buy a disc for bank mowing, too. There's a guy near me with a 100HP IH and he runs an 8' disc to cut smaller fields.

Not ninterested in another cheap bush hog. Would liek something that is height adjustable, so you could control height of cut from cab, like a pull-type hog with a lift cylinder, but I really like the cut of a flail and they seem to make the most sense.
