I have a ford 951 special (brush hog) I keep breaking the u-joint near the pto when hitting hidden rocks or small stumps and not shearing the bolt at the gear box. I bought this unit used and have no owners manual. The shear bolt is a grade three bolt. Please help Me I'm tired of replacing u-joints.

Sir, If you can post a picture of the brushhog maybe I can help you with your problem.

Thanks, Larry. :)

The 951 Ford is not much different than any other economy rotary cutter. Do you think the PTO shaft is frozen (rusted) to the input shaft of the gear box? Have you taken it apart? That's where I would start. If the shafts are verstoooken....then the shear bolt wont shear. ;)

Both u-joints are new, no frozen parts. Never heard of the slip clutch add on, would I need to shorten the drive shaft? this looks to be the answer. But I'm still puzzled why the shear pin does not shear. Thanks All

Do you have photo of the bolt head? (make sure it's not grade 8 or 10)

Can you take the bolt out and remove the drive shaft easily?

My pto shaft was pretty short so adding the slip clutch, I didn't have to cut anything. It will depend on how long yours is. I think it adds 4-5 extra inches overall - I don't have mine here to give a measurement.

The one I posted has the grooves, you might need this smooth one. SLIP CLUTCH W/1 3/8SMF M X1 3/8SMOOTH FE - Agri Supply

I'm thinking it would be better to get the slip clutch that fits on the pto end, that way I could also use it on my auger. Any suggestions? I checked the bolt it is a grade five, should I use a grade two?

We have those at $98. Ken Sweet

Yes, I'm pretty sure you should use Grade 2 - that would be the cheaper option (as long as it works!!!).

Also, when you hit a rock, do you take the time to remove the rock? Or flag it out (warn you for next time)? I've only hit the same rock ONE time... then I'll put it in the bucket and move it to the pile. Problem is that other rocks keep popping up and filling in the voids ;)
