Frontend Loader Hydraulic Chain Saw

How would something like this compare in use, price, maintenance, etc. to one of the FEL-mounted, rotating tree shears for limbing?

Good question and I look forward to other answers. One thing I see is that the pole saw has a lot more reach (8' beyond the reach of the FEL mount). Depending on the task, that reach may be required, or it may be excessive and more of a problem than an asset.

I'm thinking there are not going to be many takers, and in the long run....fewer keepers.
Using a chainsaw to cut limbs is a pretty delicate operation, to avoid getting the saw caught (pinched). This one will get caught often, and lead to breaking something if there isn't a good break-a-way system built in. Removing a pinched saw from high in a tree will not be an easy or safe procedure. IMO
At least on limbs the size shown in pic. Pruning up pine of limbs might be different, but will require a lot of maneuvering around a tree to do a good tight-to-the-tree pruning job.

But it is an interesting idea. :)

Any chain saw will pinch. Use the correct technique, make the first cut from underneath no more than half way, then the second cut from the top just above the first, the same as if you are cutting a tree.

They are working to come out with another model next year that will have a telescoping boom. This year soon they will be coming out with an adopter that will allow to change the unit from a bar saw to a circular saw for brush triming

I have owned one of these for almost two years. It works extremely well and sure beats working off of a ladder. As already stated a quarter cut under the limb first will virtually eliminate pinching. Correct positioning is also a key to cutting small and large limbs successfully. Being able to reverse the chain is handy as well. I am still amazed at how much trimming can be done is a very short time frame.

Do you use this saw in a business trimming trees? or in your own forest? in a plantation?
Timber stand improvement?

Am interested in your applications.

I don't think that will work with the saw in question. When cutting from the top, it works it's way through using gravity. If you try undercutting, there is no flexibility, you have to move the loader perfectly, enough to cut, but a hair to much and something may break. None of my equipment works that precisely 100% of the time:confused2:

That does raise a concern, as when moving around to get into position to make the cut, there runs a lot of risk bringing the saw up in a lifting motion. I agree, moving the FEL in real precise movements (especially when the delicate tip is several feet out in front) is a problem, as well as working on ground that is not likely to be very level or free from dips and humps/rocks/cut limbs/etc.

I'd be real leary of this and hope to hear back from Wayne how he handles these situations.

I use this on my 15 acre farm for personal use.

Hmmm? Wonder what I am missing out on. I have 22 acres, all forested, and can't think of a single time in 46+ years here that I would have a need for such a chain saw. And I don't get on a ladder to do any cutting either. :)

I do have a Stihl pole saw that telescopes, but even with that I may have three or four jobs for it all year.

But I don't have but 3 acres of walnut plantation, no pine trees to prune and no apple trees to prune.
