Hey guys,

I just bought a new Brush Hog from TSC over the weekend. I managed to get a brand new one instead of the leftovers from last year that set out in the rain and snow all season lol. I intend on hooking it up when i get home today from work. I was reading the manual though, and it says that i need to fill the gearbox with oil before using it. I would have thought it came filled from the factory, is this normal? I'm picking up some gear oil on the way home just in case.

Also, on the tail wheel the zerk fitting didnt have a ball bearing in the center like most do, it was just an open hole. So I pulled it, realized it was a press in fitting, and drilled a hole and tapped it for an 1/8" NPT fitting and put it in. Then I realized there is no bearing pack or anything on the top or bottom of the shaft to hold the grease in anyways...anyone have a solution for this or will it be OK? I would think it will rub against the metal and wear grooves in it not to mention rust as the grease wears off.


Aside from that, the thing seems pretty solidly built. I will let you know how it performs after tonight:thumbsup:

Well, I put oil in it, greased everything up real well, and hooked it up. It took a few minutes to dial in the height and everything, but once i got it going, it seemed to do it's job just fine. I only cut for about 15 minutes, just to make sure it worked well. It had no issues knocking down brush and some 4 foot bull grass. I did notice however, after filling the oil, that I think I put too much in. I went back over the manual afterwords, and realized I was supposed to fill it until it ran out of the small bleed hole about 4 inches below the fill hole...I filled it all the way to the fill hole...should I drain some out today before I cut again?

I would go by what the manual says. It does sound like it may be overful. Running overfilled could blow oil seals pretty easy. Ken Sweet

Ya thats a good idea, I think i will drain the excess tonight. Other than that, I am excited to finally cut down this monstrosity I have!!!

Well I drained a bunch out to where it should be and had at it. Man, I'll tell you what, I am inpressed for a cheap cutter. It just went right along not caring what i ran over with it. I think it will do just fine for what i need, I'm definitely happy with the purchase so far.

Now i need to save up for a box scraper.... :)
