I have a chance to buy a Befco tiller,it's a model 11-150-23x it's 50" wide, and has a slip clutch for $400.00.
It needs to be painted.
Is Befco tillers anygood & is this a fair price ?
Thanks Tom

I don't know anything about Befco; only heard of them on this forum. But if it's in working order and within a couple of hundred miles of here, I'll take it if you don't want it.

Don't know anything about the brand, but any tiller that works is a steal for $400. The website is www.befco.com. You might want to read about them.

I was at one of the oldest tractor dealerships in Connecticut today (60 years), and they had quite a few Befco tillers and mowers. I think they sell them as a lower cost alternative to to Woods and Bush Hog. But the owner says he has had very good experience with Befco and wouldn't sell it if he didn't.

Tom,
I'm beginning my second season with a Befco 50" off-set tiller and like it very much. Mine does not have the slip clutch. Mine is much lighter than the one you are considering so there is probably not much comparison in performance. I do like that it is easy to maintain, ie. lube,adjust and move off-set. Mine cost $1300 new and is 2 models down from the one your are looking at.

$400 seems like a real opportunity and by-the-way the paint doesn't make them work any better.

My neighbor let me borrow his Befco 50" off-set tiller the other day to do some yard work. This unit has seen some use and has the battle scars to prove it. One problem in particular is a leak on the tiller shaft where it exits the gearbox, which in this case is a chain drive unit. My neighbor was aware of the leak and stated he just adds oil (whatever he has sitting around) periodically. To get a better feel for what "oil" should be used, I asked him for the manual but unfortunately he cannot locate it. Aside from that, I noticed the carrier bearing on the opposite end of the tiller shaft is lubricated via a zirc grease fitting. I was going to place a call to Befco but before that I thought I'd give the TBN experts a chance to answer my questions, which are;

(1) Does Befco stamp the model number on their units and if so, where would I look? (I do not see any metal tags with model/serial number.)

(2) Since one tiller shaft bearing gets greased, would it be harmful to believe that the gearbox (chain drive) also receives grease instead of gear oil. My oil friends that are in the gearbox now seem like they are fighting with each other to see who can leak out the fastest.

(3) If the gearcase does in fact take oil, its obvious a seal replacement is necessary. Has anyone ever tackled this on one of these units/or other brands and if so, was it a major undertaking?

(4) Could someone give me a ballpark price for replacement tines. This one is missing three...

Thanks for any help you guys can pass along.

$1400 for the one I want new, that is a 48" with a shear pin. There's no status in a tiller (unless you have a North West tiller www.nwtiller.com $5000.00 for a rebuilt 48", built out of 1/2" plate)
Buy it, use it, if you go to sell it you'll recoup the investment and more (assuming you clean it up and paint it)

Oh geese, that would be nice... Save a few hundred on a tiller and have to do major engine repairs. Jam the piston bearing into the crankshaft, ouch.. Thousands....
