Wallenstein BXM32 - One Heckuva Chipper/Shredder

Speaking of "staying safe," I have a neighbor friend who, about 15 years ago, literally shredded his right hand right down to the wrist  in a shredder accident. So I am very much aware of what can happen if you are careless and don't observe all the safety precautions.

As far as getting "sucked in" I feel the BX62 that I have is very safe. It will beat you up and hurt you with branches whipping around, but the feed chute is quite deep and it doesn't grab and pull stuff in with such force that it would pull me in with it unless I was being careless, even then I'm not sure it could actually happen. And I don't want to find out.
For the chippers, at least, I feel the big dangers are noise, eye injuries from chips and debris, and cuts and abrasions from the branches being fed. Beyond that, following all the safety rules will minimize the danger.
I can't imagine (actually I can, I've worked in a trauma center) the horror of loosing a hand to a shredder. Lots of risk in what we do!

The BXM32 does not pull branches into the chipper hopper with very much force, and it is deep enough that you are unlikely to stick your hand all the way down to the chipper blades unless you are really stupid (or have had too many beers). The shredder hopper does pull branches in with a lot of force and with amazing speed, but it is so wide and high off the ground that it would be hard for it to pull your hand in even if it was tied to the branch. Still - it pays to be real cautious around these machines, as my neighbor's most unfortunate accident proves.

I posted these pictures once before on a separate topic, but with all these discussions of hands getting caught in chippers I thought I would repost comparison pictures of Hazmat's US spec 73554 and my European spec 73554 with the hand friendly longer feed chute.

I guess US buyers could order such an extension if so minded.

Time for a bump. :)
I'm considering picking up a Buskirk Engineering 8" PTO pellet mill..... & a Wallenstein BXM32.... to make heating pellets from our signifigant amount of yearly yard waste.
My CC/MTD 5264D sub-cut has enough PTO power to run both of these implements with no problem.
What I'd like to know is... can the discharge chut be angled INTO the shredder hopper to further reduce chip size to a fine mulch..... that in turn can be run through the pellet mill?
One of my neighbors has a tree cutting business as well.... so I can get all the wood chips I'll ever need year round. Can the BXM reduce these to mulch?
Thanks in advance.

Just wish to add a +1 to all the positives for the BXM32. I've been using one for a couple months now doing the usual woods clean-up and yard leaf shredding and I couldn't be happier. This unit will take a log closer to 4 inches than the spec'd three without a problem and the shredder is absolutely vicious pulling in long branches, from a safely stand-point makes the chipper look like ***** cat. Though I love the chipper I'm getting as much if not more use out of the shredder at this point and can't help but think what a mistake I would have made if I went solely for a chipper model. The shredder is awesome, and the entire unit very highly recommended.

I too have the Wallenstein BMX32, on my Kubota B3030, and 2nd everything said by Clarksvilleal. It is well built and a pleasure to use. I find the shredder to be invaluable for the leafy branches, and would not want to be without it.

Anyone have a Bear Cat or hydro feed pto chipper and if so which ones do you like the best. I have an Asplundh tow behind chipper that is showing her age and I don't do commercial jobs any more. Any suggestions....I am running 40 horse on a Kubota for referance.

Check out the Salsco line. I ordered mine last week.

I recently bought a BMX42 based on research here. I can say after about 10 hours of use that I LOVE THIS MACHINE.

I love the simple low-maintenance single-flywheel design, I love the fact that it will chip anything that fits through it's 4" x 10" port with ease, I love the fact that the dealer that ordered it for me got it in orange to match my DK35 by accident or design.

It's not perfect, sometimes twigs get through that I'd have rather seen busted up. But overall I'm very happy with this thing and I can recommend it without reservation.

I've had my BXM32 for a few weeks now. Today was the first that I really got to use it. This machine is great! The quality of the chips/mulch that comes out of that chute is fantastic. I'm really going to enjoy having fewer brushpiles on the property. Mine was shipped to me by the folks at Woodward Crossing. I was very happy with them as well!
