I had a 6' Woods RFM and it was OK after I
put JD blades on it (.75" longer).
Mowed 6 yrs. w/ it.
It would leave strips at blade overlap.
Dealer said nothing wrong just my tough weeds and grass!
Then wife mowed down 200 or so of our pine trees (she doesn't LOOK back) and I
started looking for MMM and new tractor.
Best BANG for buck was NH.
I have a NH 35D w/ 84" MMM real nice set-up, mows fine, and
can take off & on in 3-5 min.

I for like the side discharge, for if a clump of grass appears I can remowe the clump on the next pass.

Never had much luck w/mulching blades, for the grass needs to be almost dry to reduce the grass clumps.

I like the rear hitch, for backing up to mowe slopes and ditches plus uneven ground.

I have a rear mounted Landpride finish mower with rear discharge. I like it better than the middle mount because I mow 4 acres and need to sharpen the blades a lot. Access is much easier on a rear mount.

I also can easily disconnect it when I do other work, so I don't have to worry about clearance under the belly. I got use to the extra overhang, which can mess you up big time if you don't watch what you are doing.

The rear discharge tends to scatter the grass clippings so they blend in fairly well, but they do windrow if the grass gets tall. Down side to rear discharge is connecting a grass catcher if you need one.

Guess its a real personal thing. My neighbor has a belly mount mower and he swears thats the way to go just like I do about the rear mount!

How many wheels do you have?

I have a 3pt rear discharge First choice finish mower. Have had it @ 5 1/2 months now, and it has been an amazingly sturdy mower. I use this mower in a part time mowing/landscaping/excavtion business. so it was important to have a mower that could be removed easily. And a MMM was not compatible with the backhoe mounts. A 3pt is also easier to get under for maintenence, although I've only sharpened the blades once and wash under it weekly. I do not use mulching blades if the grass is so high that the clippings show, I just go a little slower and it cuts still mulches them. Clumping is only a problem if the grass is to high and to wet. This is solved by going over it again after it has dried out. The First Choice has 4 360 degree rotating pneaumatic caster wheels that support its weight. along with an excellent floating hitch system it follows along, even over uneven terrain and allows for a very even cut. It may take a little while to get used to having the mower follow you, but it gets to be second nature after a short while. Plus you have the advantage of being able to back in under stuff such as trees and overhangs. It also does a fair job of breaking over the edge of ditches and banks, by backing up to them and pulling it forward up and over the edge.

I hope this helps.

cj7,
I have a Woods RD8400 that is a rear mount, rear discharge finish mower. It has 4 tires - solid. One thing I've notice about rear discharge is it does not seem to throw stuff - rocks, sticks, etc near as far or as much as a side discharge. Either rear or MMM side discharge.

My rear mower has 5 wheels. One adjustable pneumatic tire at each corner and an optional hard roller in the middle of the front of the deck. The middle one is to keep the deck from scalping the lawn if you run over a mound or if one of the front wheels drops in a hole. This extra wheel has worked very well for me.

AZMike,
Hey you're right I have one too. But -- it has been pointed out to me that, a roller does not a wheel make. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif
