Ken ... I'm sickle mower ignorant. Would you mind posting the purposes of one, when you get a chance?

Are they only for hay making?

Maybe you could compare it to a rotary & flail?

Also, does the ground need to be level/ smooth?

We will sell around 100 new and used sickle mowers a year and here is what our customers are using them for: Mowing Hay fields, road banks, pond dams, trails, under electric fences. trimming down a row of grape vines in a vineyard, trimming outcropping limbs in a orchard, mowing under trees in a orchard to clear the ground before harvest of fruit or nuts by workers. mowing drainage ditches, around ponds, clipping pastures in lieu of a brush hog, mowing road right of ways, drainage ditches or canals. We have 1 on our farm that is dedicated to mowing under electric and high tensile fencing where posts range from 12 ft apart to 45 ft apart. That weed eater just don't fit me like it used to:)
Compared to a rotary of flail, the sickle mower blade is light enough that a left counter weight is not needed to get a 5-6-7-9 ft offset cut on the right side of the tractor. Comparing to a rotary mower (brush hog) a sickle mower requires a lot less tractor power and weight and they don't have a enclosed gearbox to blowup, in addition to being more user friendly in case repairs or routine maintainence is needed.
Pitman style sickle mowers will mow about 35 degrees above and below horizontal and belt drive type (dynabalance heads) will mow approx 90 degrees vertical or 70 degrees below horizontal. Ken Sweet

Hmmm, sounds like I need to investigate these sickle mowers. I have a 2 acre pond that is kicking my $ss because I have to use a week wacker to do the banks. I have been racking my brain on how to handle this. I keep lying in bed at night saying to myself, "here I have a brand new 85 horse tractor, surely there is something I can use to mow the pond banks that will not cost a fortune!".

Here is the answer to your problem. A International #1300 beltdrive (same as Ford 505) with 9 ft sickle bar at $1750 + maybe $150 shipping to a business in IL. Wiil cut just like it is laying in the picture or 70 degrees below horizontal. Ken Sweet

What kind of tractor would it take to handle that -- in terms of weight? Having something stick out 9' to the side certainly tries to tip the tractor over. My tractor is approximately 5K lbs without FEL.

I was looking at some of Land Pride's hydraulic mowers -- meant to do this kind of thing (WAY out of my $$$ range), but they were much heavier and required a BIG/HEAVY tractor.

If I remember right Kubota & Land Pride have a deal where you can buy a Land Pride implement & get it added to your tractor payment (assuming you have one).

Just because you don't have the money, doesn't mean you can't afford it!! This is the American Way!
