Mott Flail mower bearing

seems like if you don't know what the bearing is exactly, getting the bearing from flailmaster would be the way to go. I bought both cutter shaft bearings and rear roller bearings from them and have never had a problem in a couple years. the bearings are "self aligning" on my Mott 6' finish flail mower if that helps. yeah, they were a bit pricey, but they work.

So like I had mentioned earlier in another post, I got this 72" Mott flail mower from junk yard of sorts. Turns out one of the bearings on the cuttershaft had no balls to it. Instead of buying the bearing listed on Flailmaster for it, I went to a local bearing shop. They looked at it puzzled for some time. They didn't have one exactly like it, so I got a wide 206 bearing. After about 30 min of use, that $45 bearing is junk. Long story, but its no more.

Now I'm wondering if I should just order the one from Flailmaster for $97. Anyone know another place to get a bearing for one of these? I have nothing against Flailmaster, I'm just looking for options....maybe cheaper options.

The bearing on the other side looks fine, and feels tight.

thanks for the help.

All flail mowers use Spherical bearings on the cutter drum , and usually on the rear roller . Spherical bearings have two rows of balls or rollers held by a central cage . The races are ground in a way that allows the center of the bearing to run out of align to cater for any misalignment the rotor may have . A standard bearing will fail within minutes . Spherical bearings do not have grease seals as they are supposed to run in oil or grease and are sealed by separate inner and outer seals in the drum , they are not pre lubricated .

I ended up ordering the bearing from Montage today. $61. The guy on the phone was really helpful. Hopefully this works out and I can put on some new blades this fall. Seems like it will be a winter time project I can stretch over a few weeks...

Thanks for all the help!

Interesting reading this thread. I had bought a used flail mower that needed bearings and I bought some from an equipment dealer. They lasted about 2 days, now I know why! I am going to have to dig the old girl out and see about these new special bearings.

does anybody know the seal master number for the roller or a cheap place to buy the bearings

This thread is 2 years old. You would have better luck starting a new thread than trying to post at the end of this one.

And you are going to need to be more detailed if you start another post.Bearing for the roller??? What roller? For a flail mower? what brand? model? etc. Possibly some pics?

The more details you can provide, the better/faster responses you will get.
