David Brown 885
Hi I have been a lurker for a while and am now a menber.
I have a David Brown 885, 42 hp diesel and I need a way to unload andstack round bale 2 high. Some of the bales will go 1500# and I am open to suggestions.
I was looking at one of these;
Tractor 3 Point Hitch Scissor High Lift, Hay Lift #3F, uses #3F Bale Spear
But I wonder how well they work and do I need to get a hydraulic cylinder for a toplink?
I searched the forum and saw the concerns regarding tractor wt. My 885 is over 5000 pounds.
If anybody has any affordable suggestions, I'm all ears.

I believe that you need a front end mounted loader. You stated that you want to stack round bales 2 high, and the only stacking off the back is 3PTH forklift that I know of.

We sell those new high lifts and you don't have enough tractor for 1500 lb rolls. As the device goes through the scissor action, the lift will stall out. That tractor would work on 800 lb rolls. Hyd cyl is required for best results. Ken Sweet

These scissors lifts will stack 2 high at the back. Until we got a FEL, that is what we used on our farm. Ken Sweet

The issue is not your tractor's overall weight, but where is the weight centered and how will you counter balance the rear bale weight/height appropriately to prevent the front end lifting.

I had a customer a few years ago with a new 4630 Ford/New Holland tractor and he could not use the scissor lift on 1500 lb round bales. The hydraulic pressure his tractor generated on the 3 point hitch was just not enough. Ken Sweet

Ken,

Would the scissor/high lift work like a loader if a guy had a cylinder and a small loader bucket?

We fed round bales into the round bale feeders (hay rings) with one of these on the back with hydraulic cylinder and FEL on the front. Could take 2 bales out at a time this way. Ken Sweet

Thanks I don't need a loader much and this would get me one on the cheap.
