Mahindra 6000 4wd; IH x2; NHTC40DSS; International 1086; JD 5115M
I am looking for a good 10' rotary cutter to pull with a 60 hp tractor. Have looked at many, i.e., Bush Hog, Rino, Woods, and Kodiak. From the spec sheets the Kodiak beats them all and is alot less in price. Can anyone help me please. Would like to have 3pt set up, but know they are rated for more hp. Anyone have a Kodiak? Parts? Reliable? Price?

not knowing what kind of tractor you own, what kind of topography you live in, it is very hard to give you better advise. i would stay in the range of 6-8 feet to get a good cut and not have to crawl around the fields.

I had a JD 4600 and sold it realizing I need more hp. I am looking at a Mahindra 6000 4wd, 60 hp engine, 50 hp pto, w/loader. It is a heavy tractor at about 6500 lbs. My land is rolling hills in southern Ohio, some of which are pretty steep. I have about 500 acres with about 200-250 in open pastures.
Thanks so much for your help.

A 50 PTO hp tractor will have it’s “PTO” full pulling/turning a 10’ rotary cutter…

Mowing grass is one thing… but brush will be another… take a smaller 6 or 7’ unit, get the tough stuff knocked out… then go to the 10’ tow unit for wide open fairly flat area’s… that Mahindra MWFD is a fairly nice unit from what I’ve seen… but too new to tell yet…

Too bad you couldn’t “try before ya buy”… for some serious brush hogging with a 10’ cutter… I’d consider 70 PTO hp & upwards… before you are back to where you originally started…

what i have done to get without any problems to ten feet is, i bought a kunz engineering rough cut mower of five feet with it's own engine. this is a very sturdy unit and together with a 5 feet woods mower i mow commercially also in a rolling hill type of area here in pa.

Thank you for the replys.
I guess what you are telling me is that neither of you think a 10' rotary cutter, Kodiak or otherwise, is a good idea for the Mahindra 50 pto tractor. I can't go to bigger tractor in Mahindra, at least not now. 60 hp is the biggest they sell in the states right now. Could go to another brand, but have not been able to find comparable in weight, lift capacity, and price. For example, a JD 5420 w/loader 4wd is around 30k. The Mahindra is about 23k.
Also, I did run the 3pt Kodiak cutter behind the Mahindra in an open flat field, very high weeds which had not been cut for two years. I was running at a medium speed at below pto suggested speed. It did not labor the engine at all. I was told by the dealer selling the Mahindra and cutter that the Kodiak cutter was designed for lower hp tractors with the cutter deck not being as long (front to rear) as maybe the woods and bush hog. I also noticed the A frame bracing connected at a front to mid pont on the deck, not to the rear as you find on the woods & bush hog. I also notice that when I lifted the cutter the front wheels on the tractor lifted a little, not off the ground, but I knew I had 1400lbs of 7 gauge steel in the air on the back. This Mahindra did not have a loader on it, but did have about 200lbs of front weights. Does this change your opinions any?
I have been watching this board for over 3 years and feel privileged to get a reply from you guys. I have read many threads Mr. Miller with your input and am honored that you took time to reply here. Thanks again even if I don't get one more reply.

Give JD Equipment in London a call
they have State fair tractors and since the Farm Science Review is
over they should get more in.
Deere loans them for PR
They use lots of the 5xxx size tractors
and resell them at good prices.

Sounds to me that you need to find your closest Valtra dealer, and have a look at the M100 or new "A" series tractors. I think it would quite nicely fit what your requirements are!! Check out http://www.valtra.com

Just a thought.....The 4600 Deere probably brought a resale price that left you with little depreciation....If you buy the Mihindra and find it too small or can not find parts five years down the road and need to sell .....The tractor may end up having a real cost much higher than the Deere 5000.

You may want to consider a semi hitch cutter...they have pros. of 3 point and pull type cutters.

The reason the other cutters you looked at seem larger...The name brand cutters usually meet ANSI safety specifications...Those companies plan on being around awhile and keep the customers safety in Mind....Most economy cutters sacrifice the safety of the customer and the bystander...

Just a thought to remember...
