My old Ford brushhog has an OLD school slip clutch on it.

and its started slipping badly (like wont cut thick grass without slipping to a stop)

So it seems its time to adjust it... but how

I THINK that big nut is supposed to turn to add more clamping force to the friction plates.... H3ll if i can get it to turn!

I was going to get some advise before i break out the gas axe for heat.

Tighten the big nut in the back. Check closely for a set screw in the nut, before starting. Be careful, too much heat will destroy the slip discs. Ken Sweet

I had the same slip clutch on a Ford brush cutter and Ken is right on both accounts. Check and find the set screws( on mine there was a top set screw and a set screw below it so remove the top set screw and loosen the bottom set screw) loosen then turn the big nut clockwise (facing the end of the nut) to tighten.

no set screws can be found (although i would think it would have one)

heat applied, more wrenchage.... no movement... went out to hog some more.... no change...

I guess this is a good excuse to mix up some of that famous acitone/ATF mixture and try it out.

surplus center used to advertize a slip clutch PTO shaft assembly for $79...

Have you tried turning it both ways?
It may already be all the way in, and your slip plates are worn out

Are we not dealing with a left hand threaded little monster?

I would use some fluid film spray or liquid and let it work for a while before trying to turn it.

I agree the slip clutch is fully adjusted(compressed) and can not be changed and the plates are rusted/fused together.

It would be of benefit to change the parts that can be removed with the newer limited slip PTO shaft slip clutch if the plates are no longer avaliable.

Here is a link to a post that I attached a couple of PDF files that are similar to if not the same as your slip clutch.SLIP CLUTCH

I needed to finish up the brush hogging around the property so i was motivated to get this littler bugger fixed.

I mixed up some acetone/ATF penetrating fluid. applied let sit for a couple of hrs and tryed it.

nothing

second round of heat. then beat on the nut with a hammer to try and break loose the rust. then while it was still hot a second application of penetrating fluid.

then put the BIGGEST pipe wrench i have on it and it turned like butter almost :confused2: go figure....
