I am looking for a rotary tiller and have read several post on this site and have decided to give the King Kutter a much harder look. Seems like they have bad paint and the tines are breaking on some of the newer models. The paint issue is not a huge deal to me but the tines worry me. Have they fixed this issue or are the tines still breaking under normal wear? I like the gear drive and slip clutch. I am located in central MS. no rocks in soil just hard dirt until broken up the first time.

Thanks, Ronnie

Ronnie welcome to the forum. The KK tillers have gotten good reviews and the one I have used for the last 5 years has done well for me with out any broken tines. There are some KK clones out now that haven't held up as well. I recall some of them having tine problems. Look for the original King Kutter II and you will be fine.

I had a 5' King Kutter II to for years. Used it hard and never broke a single tine.
I upsized to a brand new 6' King Kutter II tiller 2 years ago. I've used it probably a dozen times now and I have broken a dozen tines.
Guess I should have kept the old 5 footer !!!

I've tilled quite a bit with mine over the years and have had no broken tines and they are still sharp. Paint job terrible, tiller has been trouble free other than getting water in the oil twice by leaving it outside without covering the vents. Both times I checked it, found the water and changed it out before using it.

I remanufactured a couple of Japanese Grey market tillers with new flange style shafts and specifically used KK tines, cause of price mostly, but they held up just fine. Never had the $$ for a new KK all I could afford was the tines, Just a Po'boy. Agri-Supply also sells a tiller that looks like the replacement tines are reasonalbe. Yes, I judge a implement buy replacement parts cost and availablty. CCM has a good looking tiller also, You do have choices. bjr

Vince do you think you just got a bad set of blades? When you replaced the broken blades on the 6ft tiller did the new blades break also?

Thanks for all the information and quick replies, Ronnie

Yes.
For some reason I think I got bad blades. I'm breaking blades on the new tiller in soil that was previously tilled with my old 5' KK tiller and it never broke a blade.
I have only replaced about half of my broken blades so far. The rest will have to wait for a while.
So far the replacement blades are working fine.

I've been using a 5' KK for nearly 10 years. Just this summer replaced 9 broken blades. Not too bad as I do till enough rocks to make the whole tractor jump and rock until I can raise the 3pt. Then there are the stumps and roots that give issues and the forgetting to raise when turning and finding a rock.

The outside tines were all broken, some of the next row in and just a couple in the middle. I take "credit" for the outside ones for turning and tilling across rocks. The inside ones are just from hitting rocks, stumps and such. Probably have a couple hundred hours of really really tough tilling with very little re-till. Mostly new fields that are reclaimed from forest land and full of stuff.

I hope the new tines are sturdy, but they are a different brand than what was there originally.

For those who have broken tines, have you reset or adjusted the slip clutch recently?
