On both of my JDs the handle for adjusting the toplink doubles as a hanger and toplink lock. It snaps on the upper end of the toplink and prevents the body from turning.

I have to use the locknut on mine or it will completely unscrew as I'm using my tiller. I keep a large crescent wrench in the 'seat pouch' just for this purpose.
Me too. I used some 1/2" rod for mine.
Makes snugging up and loosening much easier.
If I don't tighten up the nut the top link undoes itself as some folks have also mentioned.
