I'm not sure about the soil type, some parts are sandy, but most of the land is clayish...

The tires would be AG and the weight would be around 5000 pounds as far as the specs sheets go.

Thanks everyone for your answers.

3 factors.

1st soil
2nd tires (R1's)
3rd weight of tractor

I definitely agree with Diamondpilot. The major factor I have pulling a 14" 2-bottom plow with my 32.5 HP JD 3320 in NC clay is traction (I have R4 tires). You should have plenty of horsepower but getting it to the ground is the key.
With my set-up I am right on the envelope of the traction factor. I have plenty of horsepower but I have to have the plow set up just about perfect and then everything runs smoothly. Like someone on here told me, "Go for it."

Hi all,

Anyone would share his thoughts on this : Would a 45-55 or so HP tractor (NH boomer3050, Kioti DK45 or DK55, MF 1652) be strong enough to drag a 3 bottom 12-16" plow ?

Thanks, Phil

3 16's? hard pull in anything but sand.

3 12'2 or 14's.. probably.. if you have the tractor and 45hp.

I've used 3 bottoms on a 8xx series ford in medium soil.. can still be a hard pull if you get to unbroked or tough areas.

We had two 800's and one 2 and 3 14" bottoms and we worked the same land at the same time and the one with 2 would lap the one with 3 bottoms from time to time due to less slipping but both handled them OK and I guess they were near 40 HP?

Today if I was just going to be breaking gardens and larger fields very seldom I would opt for the 2 over the 3. Three are nice for getting close to the fence row however.

45 pto hp, around 48 engine.. and less on drawbar.. ( tranny and engine differences.. ie gas/diesel on the 01 will have 1-2 hp difference.. etc.. )
