I am looking, unsuccessfully so far, for a 2 inch diameter auger for my 3pt post hole digger. Does anybody know if these exist? 4 inch diameter is the smallest I have found. Thanks

Thanks for the links beenthere. I have about 70 trees that I would like to deep root feed this fall. I looked at the earth drill bits that attach to an electric hand drill, but then started thinking my 3pt post hole digger sure would make the job easier. I expect I will need 200-300 holes, a prospect I do not relish with a hand drill. The augers in the links you provided would require some type of adaptor to hook up with the output shaft on my post hole digger gearbox. But, it looks doable.

You will most likely have to modify an auger to fit your machine. Most have shafts that are almost 2" Some welding and you should be good to go.

If you do decide to go with a hand drill auger check out the ones at:

I bought a 2" to make lot's of holes under a stump I'm trying to get out, It takes a licking and keeps on ticking. I darned near twisted my hand off.

I think if you have a power source for a drill (I've a couple of generators) and a heavy duty drill it would be quicker doing it by hand. Unless you can swing your PHDand tractor around extremely easily.

I have seen hand held gas engine drives that used 2" augers at the chinese tool stores. perhaps adapt one of the bits using sleaving.

Would a puff drill auger meet your needs? Usually used for drilling holes in rocky ground for T-posts.

They do have adapters for using smaller augers.
The problem I see though is that a smaller auger may not be able to hold up under the shifting nature of tractor augers.
As your augers bores down the angle changes. It could be bent.

Many years ago I decided to try accelerating the "rotting out" of some of my larger pine stumps. A friend had given me a granular material that was supposed to do this.

So with my generator - Milwaukee 1/2" Hole Hog - 1 3/4" x 36" ships auger - - I drilled MANY holes in many trees. It didn't seem to help a bit.

I also HAD a 2" dirt auger that I tried using to drill around selected fruit trees and then add fertilizer to these drilled holes. It worked for a few holes. Then this auger ran into something tough and the Hole Hog turned the entire dirt drill into a pretzel.

Now I take a four foot length of 3/4" steel pipe and simply drive it down three feet. Pull it out along with the "core" - - add fertilizer down the open hole. Pack it down with a 1/2" x 4" wood dowel. Quick, easy, efficient.
