Found a 20 disc Smoothing harrow for sale - 300
it's got 4 angled sections in 2 rows

I'll be using a box scrape with rippers to knock down the high spots. Which leaves big ole clumps of Georgia red clay and roots. Will this smoothing disc
harrow cut and smooth out the field or does it ony work best on none grass roots area?

I've only got a 1600lb 18hp tractor 2wd with locking diff on 29x12.50 filled turf tires. With just three rippers on a 4' box scrape I can loose traction. Would my little tractor be able to pull the harrow

For a disc to really work, it needs to have the sections angled for bite.

Your tractor, like mine, would really only drag this disc on the surface, rolling around with very little resistance. You also did not say whether it was a draw bar type pull or 3 pt lift type disc. If it is heavy enough to actually bite and work, it is often too heavy for a small cut or subcut to lift effectively.

Turfs need to be chained for loose dirt work, imho.
Do you have a picture of it?

Your 18 hp (engine) tractor probably only has 10-12 hp on the drawbar. So you'll have a hard time getting that disc moving fast enough (4-6 mph) to be effective.

They are angled.

3pt

I don't think this would cut the top layer grass. Looks like I'll
just cross cross for hours using my box scrape and rippers.

Do you have, or have you thought of a middle buster to cut that soil up?
They are very cheap and work well. Sometimes they are a combo, with Danish/potato plow but also with a ripper, sub-soiler kind of blade as well.

3 rippers down is tough. Might try lightening the work load. Pull one of those rippers out and see if just using two helps your tractor.

I can rock right along with just one ripper down deep.

My yanmar has the 9 gear shuttle shift so I have gearing for power but lack traction.

From the picture, it looks like it is a 5' disc? If it is, your tractor will never pull it. I have a 23hp 4wd with a 4' disc similar to the one you are looking at, and it is all my little tractor will pull effectively. These scut tractors are great, but are not heavy enough to effectively handle larger implements. I hope this helps.

Think I'll just go ahead and knock my proJect out quickly by renting a bobcat with a Harley rake. 300.00 for 8hrs will do the trick.

Find a smaller disk to fit your tractor weight/Hp class.
