Trying to make the decision on what width and weight box scraper to use with a Kioti CK30 with FEL and R4 tires (tires not loaded). The box scraper will be used as a rear ballast for the FEL as well.

The rear R4 tires are just under 66 inches wide so expect a 66 would be the smallest width. Would the 72 inch be too much for the tractor (tractor weight just over 4000 pounds with FEL and operator in seat). The scraper will be used in sand to clay to gravel surfaces and not much in wooded areas where the extra width would be a problem.

After determining on a 66 or 72 inch width, then do the heaver (more expensive HD scrapers) work better as a FEL ballast. The units I am looking at range from around 400 to 550 pounds. Possibly an easier way to ask this question is what rear ballast weight should I use for the FEL if not using loaded tires.

Thanks

Wayne

I pull a 6' gannon, very heavy box blade behind my CK25 gear. Pulls just fine under most conditions. The Gannon probably weighs 700+ lbs. Don't know exact weight. I use it because it was the best I could find used. Ideally, I think the 66" is the best size for your tractor.

As to counterweight: get as much as you can. I have loaded tires and wouldn't be without them. My tractor is stable with no rear attachment, even at over full loading. A 400 - 500 lb boxblade hanging off the back would be more than what loaded tires provide. So, you should be good to go with that much weight behind you. Just be careful.

I have a 6 ft box blade on my CK35 HST, have R4 tires, not loaded. Does a nice job. :)
I agree with Gittyup, get a heavy one.

Ditto.

I have a 6 ft BB on my CK25 (HST--loaded tires) and have no issues. I just reworked about 1000' of road (compacted road base, no maintenance for 4-5 years) with it and had no issues at all. I got the box "over filled" several times and had no issues pulling it.

Thanks Gittyup, Mousefield, and ustmd

Thanks for confirming that you are using 6 foot BB on the same frame size tractor. I will see what the local dealer has remaining in HD box blades. I suspect they will have to order a 66 inch so will likely select a 72 inch if it is the heavier unit and in stock. IIRC the Land pride BB2566 or BB2572 were both over 500 pounds. He also has the Bush Hog Brand so will look it over as well and check the weight. It been 15 years since I have had a box blade. Sure moved alot of dirt with it with a lighter tractor.

Thanks for the pictures and the help.

I pull an old 6 footer too with the ck30. wouldn't want any smaller. Not sure what it weighs but it is a heavy duty

I have a bobcat225(27hp) and have a 5 foot BB. I can run in midrange most of the time so I am sure you could use a 6 foot model but I suspect it would be plenty. The good thing is , it would cover your tracks.

This is just a data point, not sure how well it applies.

Last night bought a used Frontier 6' BB and am pulling it with a 'CK35 in white' on (unloaded) R4's.

It's very massive, over 800lbs, and will hold nearly a yard of material [Edit: MtnViewRanch pointed out that this spec smelled a little funny. I was just taking verbatim from what i surmised was the factory spec, but when you break out the tape measure, you'd be doing good to drag a half yard with it]. I haven't had a chance to use it with the rippers yet (waiting for my rear remote), but I had the box as full as it would get with gravel, pulling it up a ~10% grade, and just had to let up a bit on the go pedal to keep it from lugging. (Medium range)

The 3pt doesn't have any problems handling it, which should be the same across the entire line. I wouldn't use it without some weight hanging off the front though.
