There is one for sale nearby that seems ok, except the blades are really banged up, they'll need alot of meterial ground off to get them sharp again. Some numbering on it suggest that it was bought at our semi annual state surplus auction. Usually equipment that ends up there has been placed out of service for some reason. I've never owned a bush hog, but from what I can see not much could be wrong with it that couldn't be seen, except a bent shaft or something. Thanks in advance.

The gearbox could be shot.

I bought a new one at a dealer that was a 2008 model which had never sold. I paid $700 for it.

The contemporary Bush Hog brand equipment is decent stuff, but NOTHING today is built like the early Bush Hog brand shredders. They were welded together out of heavy steel plate. Nothing short of Nuclear attack will hurt the deck and the gearboxes were heck for tough as well.

If I could buy a new one for between $700-$1000 dollars I would have a hard time spending more than $300 for a used one unless I knew its history and how it was taken care of. But that might just be me. Most of the used ones that I have gone and looked at were being sold for a reason. They were wore out or beat to death. You do find some good ones where people either bought a bigger or smaller bushhog or where they are selling their property and don't need the mower. Just be careful.

I have an SQ48 Squealer I purchased new in 1995. I use on both of my tractors, an I.H. 284 with no live pto and my Massey 231 diese; with live take off. Tje first thing I did when it arrived was make it much more solid.
Installed half inch plate steel for gear box mounting bolts. 3/8n thick angle iron welded for skid rails, and welded other support pieces for decking. Later, I ordered antother rear skirt to the existing one for double the thickness. Also removed the chain and welded bracing to rear of deck. Also welded the arms from 3 pt hitch to deck frame where bolts were used.
Brush hog has been used to cut my pasture, about 5 acres every year. No problems at all, keeps the brush from reappearing. I have used 3 sets of blades so far. If I was to sell, I wouldnt sell it for anything less than I paid for it from the dealer in 95...$700.00

I just sold a 42" with an extra set of blades, the blade bolts, parts manual, operators manual and both front and rear guards for $400.
I bought it 12 years ago. I know it's not the 48" model but could help with a price.

The 42 inch model would be better suited for my IH model 284 tractor without5 live pto. the tractor is light up front carrying the 48 up a slope
The Massey 231 diesel is 5000 lbs with the hard body cab, could have gone with the 60 inch hog but it was way to heavy for the smaller tractor.
I haqve used the hog to cut my yard instead of bothering with putting on 7 ft finishing mower, just raise the rear wheel above the ground and let it sit flat on the skid rails. Does an ok job
