Due to some other posts on bush hogging technique, I've been running my bush hog with it angled so the front is higher than the rear because it tends to mulch better and not leave as much of a windrow. But, now I'm concerned that it will throw things, like rocks and logs, out the front. Has anyone had an object thrown out the front of a bush hog? If so, did it hit and damage anything on the tractor?

Metal objects like t-posts or roadside trash thrown THRU rear tires are a PIA.
Chains on front help knock down or slow down thrown trash.
Front up or rear up if something is hit it usually comes out somewhere anyway.

Yes, I agree, put chains on the front and back. To be completly operator safe, I mounted a piece of plywwod up behind my seat and cut a rectangular hole in it, so I could see my cutter and then covered the hole with heavy wire mesh. I Got hit in the back with a piece of wire. aint no fun !

Danny, if you notice here in Indiana, and I'm sure other states, the highways cutting have heavy mesh screens attached to the rops. I've always thought that was a good idea for operator protection.

A friend of a friend hit a Coke can with her bush hog and it came out the front mangled and at high velocity and sliced her neck pretty good.

Danny, have you tried installing the "check chains" to provide for constant level mowing? These chains, as described in other posts, don't prevent stuff from being thrown forward, but set-up the deck to ride at a level height so almost nothing is coming forward.

I have built a screen that attaches to my ROP's . it's made of 1/2 inch expanded metal and i built brackets that use the two bolts for my rop's. keeps stuff from hitting me in the head. i always hated that using my grandfathers ford 3600. so i am fixing the problem. i now am thinking about building a full cage. and adding a belly pan.
Brush hogs are just going to throw stuff i don't think you can stop that. mine only has about 30 hours on it and it looks two years old. the rubber guard on front is hanging off after this weekend assaults on brush. i'll have to add a strip of metal to help keep it on a little longer. the back metal guard has dings in it and i have to bang the ends back because trees catch it and bend it. but it's a tool and that's why i bought one. you use it and repair it. but the end result of what it does is worth it. i have been cutting some areas that haven't been cut in years. next time it won't be so bad.

djradz - I haven't tried that yet, but have been meaning to.

The area I'm going to be mowing is tall grass and I've been over it once already this spring, so I'm pretty sure there's nothing too big in there, but you never know, especially near the road where someone could have thrown something. I let the grass get tall again though (just haven't had time to keep up with it), so I want to mow it without ending up with big windrows.

I destroyed a new tire because I did not have chains on the bushhog. I do now.

After I put a hole clean through the steel sheeted wall of my shed with a rock from my rideon mower, I went out and fitted chains to front and rear of my slasher (Aussie for Bush Hog).

I would hate to think of what damage a big rock belted by the slasher would do.

I only put half the chains on the front that I did on the back and feel that is OK. The longer grass in front of the deck would minimise the risk of things coming from the front, but as people have said, it can and will happen.

Nasty piece of work they are hey??

Cheers
