Tiller Actual tiller cutting width question....please

   / Actual tiller cutting width question....please #11
No reason for Roundup. Your tiller will kill EVERYTHING it runs over. Tillers serve two functions. One to prepare a seedbed by making it plantable and the other is killing weeds/grass like you can't belive. Now you'll need to mow it or the grass and vines will wrap around the rotar. But just save your money on the roundup. Let the tiller get you a total kill.
Tilling will not necessarily kill all of the grass in an area. If you have any clumps of grass left on top, they will regrow.
Now, if you are able to get all of it tilled under below where it can get light, that will kill it.

I haven't had to use Roundup yet. Till it once and let it lay for a week or two until all the partially exposed grass start growing again and the dormant seeds you just exposed germinate. Till it again and very little will sprout for a least a few weeks. This works for my soil in my climate - your results may vary.

To the OP:
I'm running a 5' KKII on a 32HP L3240 that is 62" across the outside of my rears, just like yours. The tiller is built offset about 3" to the right (viewed from aft), so it covers the right rear tire track and about half of the left with it mounted staight on the tractor. 5' is a nice match to the HP. There have been only a few occaisions when I wanted a 6 footer but many when I was glad I only had the 5. Ran it yesterday in 3rd gear bustin' sod for a new garden plot out in our field. She ran like a champ.

Thank you, thank you for an answer to the actual question / problem / worry

So I guess I will go with a 5 foot KKII

Nice to know it is offset a few inches and that it will cover at least 1 tire

Thank you again

You're welcome - just double check that the KKII 5' is still offset - mine's about 3 years old. The offset is something that I never noticed until last year when I was hitching it up. When I got the tiller parallel to the rear axle the durn thing wasn't centered on the tires. KK advertises that their 4' is offset, but I don't remember so much as a word about the 5' being offset.

Anyway - check before you pays your money.

Get a tiller that covers both tracks if at all possible its just a better way to till not having any compaction anywhere. The garden will look better and you will be happier and when you hire out its really going to pay off. jmho

There-in lies the problem / question

My tractor is 62" wide (supposedly)

no one can say for sure if my tractor has enough PTO HP for a 72 inch tiller
(Even the MFG's sites suggest a higher HP than I have at the PTO)

A 60 inch tiller will work with my PTO HP plus it may be offset a bit and will cover 1 tire completely and most of the other.

the final pass will / should have no compacted earth under it if done correctly

You are probably ok with a 60" tiller being as how there will be spill over anyway and if one wheel is completely covered I think you are close enough for it not to matter now that I think about it. hth

btw I have a 72" KK2 and love the heck out of it if that helps as a brand reference!!!
