Do any of you add weight to a standard cultivator with 6 spring tines on it? Or do you just let it dig itself down as far as it will go (which isn't very deep) and leave it at that? Would adding some weight help it dig a little deeper?? I know their purpose is not to dig deep like a heavier chisel plow will do, but it seems like to me it wouldn't hurt to add some weight so it will dig down a little bit deeper. Also, if you add a furrow plow in the middle, will that help it did any deeper, or make no difference at all?? Just curious as to what your experiences are with them.....

I am not sure what your experience has been with one, but mine will dig so deep as to bring the tractor to it's knees, just as a middle buster or box blade will.

I only run mine so as to penetrate 6-7" inches. Its purpose is served at that depth.

Haven't tried with your same implement, but on disc I have used a few pieces of bulldozer or excavator track. Have even used sections of railroad track.

My King Kutter 7 tine field cultivator will go so deep that I have to use low range 1st gear. Great tool for weed control or soil prep. Love mine.

Is your cultivator a wheeled pull type or is it a Three Point Mount.??:)

Here is my additional thinking. If a field cultivator isn't going deep enough, the soil is likely severely compacted?? Maybe plow first? A row of chisels would accomplish some deep ripping. Middle buster would as well.

A C-tined, spring tooth cultivator isn't really isn't designed to do primary chiseling, adding weight or not adding weight. That is more the job of the plow, chisel, or ripper.

I would not try to add weight to cultivator. You'll break something sooner rather than later. Don't try to plow with your cultivator.

You should never add weight to any tool that does not have a factory weight box on it. Adding weight to cultivators and discs will sure help performance, however, one of these days, you will be rebuilding you implement, big time. IMHO, if you have to weight it, you probably have the wrong tool for the job. Ken Sweet.

It's a 3pt attachment. I just got it last weekend so haven't had a chance to use it yet, but plan to try it out in the next 2-3 weeks. This is the first cultivator I've owned, so that's why I am asking since I don't know what to expect with it. Sounds like it should not need any weight added at all. I was intending to use it to break up an old garden spot so this (and my disc harrow) is all I have to work with at the moment.
