I've just begun looking for a disc harrow to finish up what I've plowed but am on a tight budget, don't have many tools, can't weld yet and need to make a smart purchase. For the previous reasons I was leaning towards a new King Kutter King Kutter Angle Frame Disc Harrow 4 1/2-Ft., Combination, Model# 16-12-C | Category 1 Disc Harrows + Rakes | Northern Tool + Equipment but by the time I pay for shipping the price is way out of my range. I noticed a local used implement dealer had an old MF-25 for $550 , I can't understand either why both hitch point pins are in the same direction MASSEY-FERGUSON 25 Disks For Sale At TractorHouse.com...and I can go pick it up with my trailer. I have a few questions maybe you can help with, this one is 6 1/2 ft., I'm curious if it's too heavy for my 28 hp 4WD Mahindra compact tractor? If not, what should I check for when I go look at it to make sure I won't have immediate expense? How much do you think the maintenance will be to keep it up (based on relatively light usage)? Is this really better than one of the new ones? If this one is too heavy/big, what would you recommend for my size tractor?

* Looking at some of the Howse disc harrows, I may have just answered my own question, looks like this MF-25 is probably going to need 30+ HP. I guess I should be looking for a light duty model.

Your tractor should be able to drag the MF 6.5' disc with ease. HP is not the primary factor. Traction, tire load, and soil conditions determine success. I pull my neighbors 6' disc with 15hp Case VAC tricycle with no trouble. I would take a close look at the bearings and spin all the blades with your hand. Check the welds, make an offer. Good luck.

Those Massey disks are supposed to be pretty good. The ones that you have shown have been used that's for sure, and you might be able to get them for less $$$. I would not even consider a 4 1/2' disk for your tractor, waaaaaaaaay to small. Your tractor should handle that Massey disk just fine. I would like to find one of those to use behind my 3215.

I am looking in the 8' range and finding new and used but with good blades/bearings are not all that much cheaper used.

Look at going new then you know what you have and how it was used unless you slip up on a get deal on a used one.

Inflation seems to be alive and well in used anything today.

If the box bearings are not broke, I had rather have the MF 25 than 2 of the new discs. The 25 discs fit up closer to the tractor by design and that helps keep your front end down. I pulled a 7 ft Massey 35 with 2 WD 35 hp tractor and never had a problem. Ken Sweet

thanks all, I'm going to check it out and if the bearings are in good shape, I may just go for it.

Looking at the picture, I still don't understand why one of the stabilizer pins is mounted on the inside instead of the outside.

The lift arm pins are usually both facing inward, however, they can be manipulated to fit tractors of different sizes. If you buy the disc, it has another neat feature that makes it unique. It has a float and fixed position for the gangs. Ken Sweet

Whatever you decide, get one with at least 120lb/blade. The heavier the better. Good solid frame, heavy bearings (lots of them) are the things to look for.

Anything less is worthless as you'll be compacting soil not working it.

Pretty tough to find a 6 1/2' 3pt disk that weighs 2400lbs. But your right, it sure would work good.

The lift pins are removable, you can put them in any configuration that you want. Not anything to worry about. ;)
