Hey Folks!

I just had 60 acres cleared with a bull-dozer and they did a fine job. Now, to clean it up for pasture, to help rid the remains of roots and rocks, I am told the best method is a disc harrow. A fellow will harrow it for 50.00 per acre, but that's only two passes. I have been told that I may as well get my own harrow--as I have 100 acres and probably need one.

I have a John Deere 5425 (about 75 HP) so I can pull quite a bit of weight.

I have been advised that an offset will cut better, but a gang will smooth better.

Others have said to get an offset, and drag a beam or heavy object behind it to smooth the soil.

Also, regardless of the type, do you think I can pick something up in the 3,000 to 5,000 dollar price range? I live in central North Carolina.

Thanks again for all you help!

I would check with my local state Forestry Dept. I had timber thinned on my farm in Georgia and they came out with very large and heavy harrow, pulled by a small dozer and did a great job. I put in about 9 or 10 small food plots. They only charged $110 per hour. They only charged for actual running time. You could have them look at it and probably get a close estimate. Easy to break disks in new ground with lot of rocks.

Offset disk is the way to go! Check with your local Gov. Ag office (ASCS or whatever they call it these days), sometimes they have some equipment to rent or may know where you can rent one. Then maybe get a regular tandem disk to finish the job. ~~ grnspot110

Offset discs are smoother, tandem sometimes throws dirt and makes hills and furrows.

If you are considering a 3 PH disc it narrows the choices.

Used pull-type 8' discs should be well within your price range. Check Craigslist.

Really what you need is a Bog Disc and then a finishing disc. Ken Sweet

If you are making "hills & furrows", reset or slow down, you're out of adjustment! ~~ grnspot110

I would get JD 425 offset. Expensive but worth every penny. Other option is to get an old wheel disc. Get at least 2000lb disc or 120lb/blade.

425 would be a perfect match for your tractor.
