What would yall consider a good buy on a 3py log splitter? It uses remote hydraulic hook ups not off the PTO. It is constructed with an I-beam and appears to have a new valve on it. Have not talked to the guy yet or seen it run, i have a pic but have to wait to get home to get it off my phone and onto the net.

I paid just under $600 for mine, a SpeeCo 4x24 from Tractor Supply. But it didn't come with hoses, so that pushed the ready-to-use price up slightly. But the only tractor I see listed in your sig line is a YM2000. They don't typically come with rear remotes. Have you added a pair yourself? Also - assuming the YM2000 - you might want to check the gpm rating of its hydraulic pump against the cylinder size of the splitter you're considering. Goes to splitter cycle time.

Not sure what a good buy would be but I would deffinatally check your GPM specs.

A brief look and I couldn't find them but it is probabally about 5gpm. Assuming you have rear remotes and can run the splitter, If it is a 4x24 cylinder(most are) this would give you about 16 seconds jsut to extend the cylinder. A little less to retract. So you are looking at about a 30 second total cycle time. That is really slow. Most stand alone units on the market are in the 12-16 second range. So you are looking at about twice as slow as most splitters. If you can live with that, go for it if it is a good price.

Yea i dont have remotes, i also posted a thread about adding them to the yanmar. I have a metal line that has a rubber hose where with some fab i could hook up quick disconnects and run it off them. But yea i think 5gpm is close enough and that cycle time would not suit me, thanks, i think i may pass , unless i think i can buy and sell for a profit. They want $350 for it.

That is probabally not too bad of a price if it is in good shape.

Of if you are considering building one, that is a good start with a beam, cylinder and valve. All you would need is a tank, pump, and motor.

i even thought about that too. I could get a HF motor fairly cheaply, but then id need the pump n tank etc.

Tank should be easy to fab if you are handy, if not, a shop could probabally build you one for under $100. And a pump woud rund you about $150

Another option might be a PTO pump and tank. I built one a few years ago using 22 GPM PTO pump. It worked great. I liked the 3pt design but it ties up the tractor when used.

I later added "wings" to the table with 3/8" rod. got tired of split pieces flopping off the table and having to pick them up off the ground. Thanks.
