Someone gave me this bush hog. There's no identification tags on it, but it reminds me of the Bush Hog (brand) we had growing up. Not sure what brand it really is. There's some work that it needs, but it appears to be a very heavy duty mower, I assume it's worth investing in. Blades spin very easily... The blades look bad, bolts look like rust balls and will have to be cut off...

My question: Half of the PTO shaft is missing. I'm wondering if this can be replaced with a generic PTO shaft like I saw at Tractor Supply(?) From what I saw, it looked like at least 100 bucks for the shaft and U-joint. Is there some other [cheaper :)] resource for this kind of thing?

It is a bush hog.

Measure both directions on the inside of the shaft and post it here. It is probably a universal size and not hard to locate. (Assuming you have 6pt 540 output on your tractor). I know I could be talked out of one for less than $100, so let's see if somebody closer has one also. You need to figure out the lenght of the missing piece. Too short, it falls apart... too long, it damages your tractor pto.

The inside length of the tube is 21", and the tube is an 1 1/8" square. How would I determine the correct length?

The tractor PTO is what I would call standard. It has 6 splines, and the shaft is an inch in diameter. I reckon that's a 6 pt 540(?) :confused2:

Looks square at 1.125 but I would bet shipping that it isn't square, but rectangle 1x1.125

Maybe a double check????

OK, I'll double check the "square" measurement in the morning (it's dark now :D).

Double-checked the tube measurements with a caliper. It's kinda hard because the end is beat up a little, but it does appear to be 1" x 1 1/8".

I know I have one, cause it fits one of the old bush hogs I have out back. I will take a look on my "odds and ends" shelf and see if I have another. As far as the measurement of the total shaft, there is probably a standardized method, but I don't know it. I would hook up the bush hog to the tractor and measure the distance from the piece you have to the tractor pto at it's longest and shortest places, then allow for the depth that the shaft can go into the part you have without bottoming out. Not rocket science, just have to double check it a couple of times to be SURE before cutting the part.
What width is the bush hog?

I think the tag for the bush hog is typically on the front of the gearbox if memory serves me right.
